Google Apps for Business Receives Major Security Boost

Google has announced that it has earned ISO 27001 certification, which has made Google Apps for Business a whole lot safer for enterprise customers.

ISO 27001 certification essentially ensures that Google is following the standard ISO (International Organization for Standardization) information security management protocols and best practices.

?ISO 27001 is one of the most widely recognized, internationally accepted independent security standards and we have earned it for the systems, technology, processes and data centers serving Google Apps for Business,? wrote Eran Feigenbaum, director of security for Google Enterprise.

The entire process took about nine months and was certified by Ernst & Young CertifyPoint, an ISO certification body. TechCrunch reported that Google also regularly submits itself to third-party audits according to the SSAE 16/ISAE 3402 standard, which is very similar to the ISO 27001 standard.

Google Apps has been a valuable tool set for many small businesses. The company hopes this certification will help to assure enterprise customers that Google is ?committed to ongoing development and maintenance of a robust Information Security Management System (ISMS).?

Although this might not mean much to startups and small businesses, the added certification might make larger corporations more inclined to invest in Google?s cloud solutions.
