Activists: Troops kills up to 50 in central Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? President Bashar Assad's forces killed at least 50 civilians, including 13 children, in central Syria on Friday, activists said, in one of the highest death tolls in one specific area since an internationally-brokered cease-fire went into effect last month.

Syrian troops using tanks, mortars and heavy machine guns pounded the area of Houla, a region made up of several towns and villages in the province of Homs, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees activist groups said.

Both groups said at least 50 people were killed. The Observatory, which has a network of activists around the country, said the dead included 13 children. It added that about 100 people were wounded.

An amateur video posted online by activists showed more than a dozen bodies lined up inside a room. They included about 10 children who were covered with sheets that only showed their bloodied faces.

"Houla was subjected to a massacre," a man could be heard saying inside the room.

The Observatory said in one incident in Houla, a family of six was killed when their home received a direct hit.

Homs has been among the hardest hit provinces in a government crackdown since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March last year. The U.N. said several weeks ago that 9,000 people have been killed in Syria in the past 15 months. Hundreds more have died since.

Attacks like Friday's, as well as strikes by rebel forces on government troops, have persisted despite the deployment of more than 250 U.N. observers who have fanned out across Syria to monitor a cease-fire brokered by international envoy Kofi Annan.

Also Friday, a group of Lebanese Shiites who were kidnapped in Syria were released in good health, three days after gunmen abducted the men as they returned from a religious pilgrimage.

The kidnappings fueled fears that Lebanon is getting drawn into the bloody conflict in neighboring Syria. In the hours after Tuesday's abductions, protests erupted in Beirut's Shiite-dominated southern suburbs, where residents burned tires and blocked roads.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati confirmed the men were released, saying they were "in good health and on their way to Beirut." The pilgrims were believed to have been returning from a trip to visit holy sites in Iran when they were abducted.

The hostages were believed to be 11 Lebanese and one Syrian driver. Lebanese and Syrian officials have blamed Syrian rebels for the kidnappings, but nobody has claimed responsibility.

Sunnis form the backbone of the Syrian revolt, which has unleashed seething sectarian tensions. Assad and the country's ruling elite belong to the tiny Alawite sect, which is an offshoot of Shiism.

The leader of Lebanon's powerful Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which has stood by the Syrian regime, welcomed the pilgrims' release. Speaking by satellite link, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said the group's support for Syria is firm.

"If you aim to put pressure on our political stance, this will not make any difference," he said of the kidnappings.

The abductions came at a time of deep tension in Lebanon over Syria. The countries share a web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, which can quickly turn violent. Clashes linked to the Syria conflict have killed at least 10 people in Lebanon the past two weeks.

Nasrallah's comments appeared to be an attempt to de-escalate the recent tensions.

"I also thank all the people who controlled their emotions and responded to our call for calm, wisdom and patience," Nasrallah said, referring to a speech he gave earlier this week calling on his supporters not to take to the streets in anger.

Though NBC hasn't confirmed it yet, Wiig made what is believed to be her final appearance on the show after seven years of making America laugh along with the Target Lady, Gilly and boozy Kathy Lee Gifford. The waterworks were flowing as she slow-danced with her cast mates to the strains of the Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday," and Michaels told reporters on Monday that emotions were running high that night.

"It was difficult for all of us," Michaels said on the red carpet for the 71st Annual Peabody Awards on Monday night. "And I think most difficult for her ... I don't think it will be the last time she will be on that stage," he added.

Current cast member Fred Armisen told the New York Post that he'll miss his friend, but isn't worried that she'll become a stranger. ""It was both sad and happy because no one ever leaves 'SNL,'" he said. "Did you see the good nights? Kristen, Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Chris Parnell, everyone. No one goes very far." While "Bridesmaids" star and co-writer Wiig appears headed off to pursue her movie career
, it's still unclear if two other "SNL" veterans who were rumored to be leaving, Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis, are packing up as well. Michaels appeared to tamp down those whispers Monday night, answering "not so far, yeah," when asked by TheWrap, if anything had been decided about the pair's future.

"You never know," Michaels said about the lack of a similar goodbye to the two. "I think everyone gets through the season and just the level of fatigue by the end is just overwhelming, and it's a very emotional time. I've had a rule since the second season, which is to not make any decisions in June. We'll see in July."

Though Wiig's send-off was emotional, it was all fun at the cast after-party, according to Us Magazine. Donning leather shorts and an American flag t-shirt, the 38-year-old actress joined the Foo Fighters on the stage at the Rockefeller Center Skating Rink to sing lead vocals on a cover of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll." The night also featured Wiig's pal and fellow "SNL" alum, Amy Poehler, jamming on Jett's "Bad Reputation."

I often say that we tend to do the least for those who do the most for us. You profusely thank your barista for making you a cup of coffee in the morning, but when was the last time you thanked one of your parents for raising you?

A perfect example of how this plays out is with our nation's military dads. These are men who make incredible sacrifices for both their families and our nation. While most dads have the ability to come home every night to their children, these dads have to spend agonizing periods of time on the other side of the world, often in dangerous situations, waiting for a precious moment when they can squeeze in a pixelated video call with their family back home. And while most dads enjoy the wonderful freedoms this nation provides for our families, these dads are overseas ensuring that we can keep them.

For these reasons, and many more, National Fatherhood Initiative honors military dads and their families each year with the Military Fatherhood Award?. Each year, the award is given to a military dad who displays an ongoing commitment and dedication to his children, makes extraordinary efforts to father from a distance when deployed, successfully balances military and family life, and makes an effort to mentor other military fathers and/or military children who are separated from their fathers.

This year, NFI received over 450 nominations from the wives, children, friends and colleagues of our nation's military dads, and has narrowed them down to the following three exemplary finalists:

-- 1st Lieutenant William Edwards, U.S. Army - Serving at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Lt. Edwards uses his musical and cinematic talents to stay connected with his four children before, during and after his deployments. He helps other military dads stay connected to their children by making special effects-filled action/comedy films with them that they can send back home. He is involved in all kinds of activities with his children and is intentional in teaching his children the values they need to succeed in life.

-- Senior Airman Jonathan Jackson, U.S. Air Force - Serving at Travis Air Force Base, California, SRA Jackson has fostered six children and reunited four of those children with their natural birth parents after assisting their families with rehabilitation from substance abuse and parental neglect. He adopted his two sons out of foster care. He is also exemplary in his military service: the 6th Air Refueling Squadron recognized SRA Jackson as their 2011 Warrior of the Year and 2011 Airman of the Year.

-- Lieutenant Dennis Kelly, U.S. Navy - Serving at Camp Pendleton, California, Lt. Kelly made over 60 videos through United Through Reading to stay connected to his five children during his deployments. While home, he spends plenty of one-on-one time with his children, catering to their own unique interests. While being a great dad to his own kids, he strives to enrich the lives of other military dads by serving as a facilitator of NFI's 24/7 Dad? and Doctor Dad? programs, as well as several other family-strengthening programs.

To bring as much exposure as possible to these families' stories of courage and sacrifice, we open the selection of the winner to the public on National Fatherhood Initiative's Facebook page. Each family has submitted a short home video of why they think their dad should receive the award. Voters can watch the videos and cast their vote every day through noon on May 25. Shortly thereafter, NFI will announce the winner, then head to the winner's base in June, just in time for Father's Day, for the award presentation.

Your vote is a simple way that you can take the time to say "thank you" to our nation's military dads. After all they do for us, it is the least we can do for them.

UN global health agency chief wins 2nd term

GENEVA (AP) ? Dr. Margaret Chan, who has steered the World Health Organization through crises over bird flu and the respiratory SARS bug, has won a second five-year term as its director-general.

The World Health Assembly, which oversees the U.N. health agency, on Wednesday reappointed Chan, during a closed-door session. She ran unopposed.

An agency statement quoted Chan, who has Chinese nationality, as saying she will fight for universal health coverage as "the single most powerful concept that public health has to offer. It is a powerful equalizer."

Chan, a Canadian-trained medical doctor who was health director in Hong Kong before going to work for WHO in 2003, also was quoted as saying that uncertainty over international health funding is a top priority.

Her second term runs until June 30, 2017.
