Engineers fired Navy's first industry-built electromagnetic railgun

ARLINGTON, Va. Engineers have fired the Navy's first industry-built electromagnetic railgun (EM Railgun) prototype launcher at a test facility, commencing an evaluation that is an important intermediate step toward a future tactical weapon for ships, officials announced Feb. 28.

The firing at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) kicks off a two- month-long test series by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to evaluate the first of two industry-built launchers. The tests will bring the Navy closer to a new naval gun system capable of extended ranges against surface, air and ground targets.

"We are starting our full-energy tests to evaluate the barrel life and structural integrity of the prototype system," said Roger Ellis, program manager of the EM Railgun, part of ONR's Naval Air Warfare and Weapons Department. "It's the next step toward a future tactical system."

The EM Railgun launcher is a long-range weapon that fires projectiles using electricity instead of chemical propellants. Magnetic fields created by high electrical currents accelerate a sliding metal conductor, or armature, between two rails to launch projectiles at 4,500 mph to 5,600 mph.

The 32-megajoule prototype demonstrator, built by BAE Systems, arrived at NSWCDD on Jan. 30. One megajoule of energy is equivalent to a 1-ton car being thrust at 100 mph. The prototypewhich now looks more like a naval weapon compared to previous lab-style launchersis the first of two industry-built launchers to be delivered to the Navy. General Atomics is building the second launcher, scheduled for delivery in April. ONR previously relied upon laboratory-built systems to advance the technology.

After installing the BAE Systems launcher and outfitting it with a comprehensive suite of sensors, high-speed cameras and measuring devices, engineers fired successful low-energy test shots to prepare it for the evaluation. The team will conduct tests at 20 megajoules and 32 megajoules, shooting test projectiles similar to what was previously fired through NSWCDD's laboratory launcher.

"The test series will characterize the gun's performance by shooting several rounds through the barrel at various energy levels to fully exercise the capabilities of the prototype," said Ellis.

When fully developed, the EM Railgun will give Sailors a dramatically increased multimission capability. Its increased velocity and extended range over traditional shipboard weapons will allow them to conduct precise, long-range naval surface fire support for land strikes; ship self-defense against cruise and ballistic missiles; and surface warfare to deter enemy vessels. The Navy's near-term goal is a 20- to 32-megajoule weapon that shoots a distance of 50 to 100 nautical miles.

To achieve this, the Navy is moving ahead with the EM Railgun program's next phase: to develop thermal management systems for both the launcher and pulsed power to facilitate increased firing rates of up to 10 rounds per minute. Toward this end, BAE and General Atomics have been contracted to begin concept design of a next-generation thermally managed launcher.

"The next phase of the development effort is to demonstrate the ability to operate at a firing rate of significant military utility," Ellis said.

Additionally, ONR awarded contracts through Naval Sea Systems Command to General Atomics, BAE Systems and Raytheon Co. to develop a pulsed power system capable of meeting the firing rate goal.

Various new and existing ship platforms are currently being analyzed for future integration.

Mind And Body Spirit

This constant stream of digital communication can be overwhelming. Rather than making us feel more connected many find that it contributes to a deep sense of disconnectedness and general malaise. As more people spend the majority of their work and personal days in front of computer screens, we are left to wonder if our spiritual and emotional selves are being nourished.

It can refer to releasing all unnecessary muscular tension while maintaining structural alignment. This means loosening and stretching your muscles, releasing your tensions throughout your body, and opening your joints from within. This does not mean that you turn limp and soft. It means loose and prepared with no unnecessary tension.

A loss of control makes me feel imperfect and weak. I hate that! I shouldn?t use the word imperfect; maybe, what I?m realizing is that I?m not as strong as I like to think I am. I truly am an imperfect being and imperfect means to fail. It?s the bar that I set for myself and it?s a bar that can never truly be reached. I can count every single one of my imperfections and I hate that too. All of these little issues makes me realize that I can?t count on myself physically and sometimes even count on myself emotionally.

Then the efferent nerve system carries the signal from here to the appropriate muscle groups. The proprioceptors then send signals back to the brain with the afferent nervous system. The signals enter the cerebellum by way of the medulla and appropriately modify the signals the cerebellum is sending to the muscle control centers in the frontal lobe.

This is how we feel about our Self-Help work. Some people will take an advantage of the self-help techniques and grow and some may not choose to. But when you are ready it will happen. The techniques work sometimes in surprising ways. We can only plant the seeds as it is up to you to implement the self-help techniques to help yourself.

I help realtors when they?re preparing homes to sell. Sometimes my realtor clients will call and ask me to clear the energy of a house that is just not selling. Sometimes it?s mourning the loss of the family who left it, or feeling the effects of a nasty divorce. We?ve all heard of haunted houses, and often that?s stuck energy from a traumatic event.

It is very possible that handwriting is a good cognitive exercise for adults working to keep their minds sharps as they age. Handwriting stimulates different parts of the brain much like doing a variety of puzzles may delay dementia and Alzheimer?s disease.

It also controls pores & nose, as well as bowel movement (breathing massages colon via diaphragm to ensure regular movements). Symptoms include: voice weakness, shortness of breath, fatigue, cold hands, prone to colds, spontaneous sweating, sinus problems, airborne allergies, poor sense of smell, sneezing. Emotional tendencies are grief and sadness related.

If you then look beneath the fear, you will see another common thread: lack of confidence and self-acceptance.

'Dictator' dumps urn of 'ashes' on Ryan Seacrest

Sacha Baron Cohen shows off the urn he brought on the Oscar red carpet shortly before dumping its contents on Ryan Seacrest.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Sacha Baron Cohen not only was allowed to stride the red carpet in costume as Admiral General Aladeen,?"The Dictator" from his upcoming movie, but he brought a fellow dictator along with him. Kind of. Clad in full dictator regalia, he was accompanied by two beautiful women in short-skirted "army" uniforms and red berets. And in his arms, he carried a cremation urn with an image of late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

But those ashes didn't stay in the urn long. When Baron Cohen stepped over to talk to E! red-carpet host Ryan Seacrest, he dumped the "ashes" all over Seacrest's tux.

Before it happened, Seacrest asked Baron Cohen's "Dictator" character who he was wearing, and Baron Cohen replied, "I'm wearing John Galliano, but the socks are K-Mart." He then said he was thrilled to bring his "dear friend and tennis doubles partner Kim Jong-il to the Oscars."

He then tipped the urn as if to show Seacrest something and the urn spilled all over the host. As security led?Baron Cohen?away, he told Seacrest: "Now if somebody asks who you are wearing, you?will say Kim Jong-il."

Seacrest did not appear pleased with the act as he brushed off his black tuxedo?(see for yourself), although he allowed that he thought the "ashes" were really pancake mix, and told co-host Giuliana Rancic that "I had an idea something was coming, I didn't know in what fashion or form."

Others were more entertained by the joke though.

Tina Fey told the host, "You're a victim of comedy."

"I understand this is a dead body," said Antonio Banderas.

Seacrest seemed to take it in his stride later, however, tweeting "My mom always told me to pack two jackets for red carpets, always wondered why. Now I know."

Undergoing Lasik Cincinnati Surgeons Perform | New Health and ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Those with certain vision problems may undergo surgery to spare them from having to wear contacts or eyeglasses. However, this doesn?t require a scalpel to be used. Also, it?s a very quick operation, requiring approximately 15 minutes only to have both eyes operated on. It?s called Lasik Cincinnati eye surgeons offer.

When consulting an eye specialist, you have to meet certain criteria to be considered as a candidate for having the surgery. There shouldn?t be autoimmune or degenerative disorders around, or excessive dryness of the eyes. Women who are pregnant or nursing aren?t candidates as hormones may also affect the vision. But if the condition which keeps a person from undergoing the operation is treatable, he or she may eventually receive the surgery.

The treatment is designed for vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Once a person qualifies for the surgery, he or she will be advised to skip wearing contact lenses for a few weeks. It?s essential that during the mapping, the cornea is back to its natural shape.

Prior to the operation, numbing eye drops will be instilled. A speculum will keep the eyelids open. When the laser machine springs into action, you will hear loud clicking sounds. What it?s doing is create a corneal flap, removing microscopic parts to bring back the cornea into its proper shape.

As earlier said, it will take about 15 minutes to have both eyes operated on. There are instances wherein the surgeon will perform the operation on one eye only. After about a week, the other eye will get the treatment.

The person may go home right away accompanied by someone the moment Lasik Cincinnati surgeons carry out is through. He or she will be told to sleep a lot for faster recovery. Many people who had undergone it were capable of going back to work the next day, though strongly advised against doing exercises or strenuous activities for several weeks.

The Importance of Excellent Online Customer Service and How To Improve

There is much more to reaching success on the web with your own business, and one of those additional responsibilities is ensuring you give terrific customer service. However, when you?re aiming to provide an online customer service that matters, you have to focus on things a little differently. You do already have a pretty good idea of what needs to be done because you are a customer of other businesses. This doesn?t change when you?re doing it online, but your approach definitely changes. Given below are a few easy to apply tips that you can use to improve your online customer service. Master Cleanse Secrets

You should avoid replying to emails in a way that appears automated. Customers are not going to feel like they?re getting personal attention when they receive automated replies. Every customer who sends an email query should receive a personal reply. It?s important to respond to even minor issues with personal messages. People appreciate the personal touch, especially in today?s highly automated world. Your customers will feel more respected and will like you for that. Illusion Mage Review Every aspect of your website and the whole process of connecting to you should be as simple and easy to follow as possible. Give your customers a less complicated route towards getting around your website. For example, navigation must be top notch and be easy to use. Variety is often appreciated, and for instance you can also give out your social media contact information, too. Giving people as many options as possible for this will only help you in the long run. PS3LightsFix Review

Finally, if your online business is growing and the customer support is getting out of hand, immediately increase your staff. Don?t compromise on the quality of your customer service whatsoever. Having a quality customer support team is one thing that?s crucial for your business?s growth, and this means having enough people to handle the task. Having a large enough staff to adequately address every customer?s needs is something that?s absolutely necessary. At the same time, don?t overextend yourself and hire employees before you really need them. Take a good look at your business, including your budget and the current state of your customer support and you should be able to come to the right decision about whether or not to hire more people.

There is so much you can do to empower your customer service, and you really should find out what they are. What you need to do first is assess your own business, and then see what can be done to improve what you have. Just begin slowly and work up to what you envision your customer service needs to be.

You can even learn from other businesses, so keep your eyes peeled about that.

SF State to increase student fees to pay for new recreation center ...

SFSU recreation center

SF State's men's volleyball coach, Eric Ballelos, goes up for a hit against his players in a practice scrimmage, Feb. 16. Photo by Sam Battles.

Student fee increases are nothing new, but this semester a newly-approved fee requires students to pay for a campus recreation center that will not be completed for several years after most students have moved on from the University.

The $35 per semester fee was approved for fall of this academic year, effective this academic year; it will gradually increase each year until it reaches $160 each semester in 2014. Construction will not begin until 2015, with a target completion date sometime in 2017. Even though current students will be funding the center, their future access has yet to be guaranteed.

?No final decisions have been made about who will have access to the building beyond students,? said Ajani Byrd, director of campus recreation. ?Ideas (dealing) with alumni, faculty, staff, and community members have not been established yet.?

The administration recently chose the current site of the Sutro Library over the currently abandoned School of the Arts site after the University determined that the Annex was too expensive to tear down.

?Sutro allows for outside components nearby to be built,? said Guy Dalpe, student center managing director. ?The visual components are nice, you can see the ocean.?

The various groups heading the project still have some major decisions to make in the upcoming years. After selecting the Sutro Library site, the next step is to hire an architecture firm to design the center, after which the various amenities and recreation and wellness rooms can be determined.

According to Byrd, the student fees are final and the total projected cost will be between $80 million and $93 million. Future student enrollment, labor costs and the price fluctuation of various materials will affect the ultimate price tag.

?It?s around a $90 million building,? Byrd said. ?We have a budget, and we have to work within it or (students) vote to raise the fees.?

Franko Ali, vice president of university affairs for Associated Students Inc., said the project is 100 percent paid for by the student fee. The recreation department has put up the bond for construction and the money is a part of the student center account, held by the University.

?The only funding is from the student fees,? Ali said. ?And in that way, it will be run by students.?

The fee proposals originated as a petition formed by the students who brought it to an advisory committee. Campus recreation, ASI and the student center got involved by working together to create a series of questionnaires before Fall 2010 to find out student interest in creating the center.

After a student poll approval, the advisory committee brought the proposal to President Robert A. Corrigan, who approved it for the Fall 2010 semester.

Despite the added costs of building the center, students who participate in club and intramural teams generally feel that additional space is needed and would allow for a wider array of physical activities.

?I?m excited. It looks really awesome.?I?d rather pay for this than a lot of other things because our facilities are really old,? said Samantha Rogers, the 22-year-old president of the women?s club volleyball. ?But I?m sure a lot of people are not looking forward to the extra (fees).?

Others students feel that the money would be better served abridging some of the negative effects of the current budget crisis.

?I feel like that?s going to be a lot of wasted money,? said 21-year-old Mindy Gaines, a creative writing major. ?We could find something on campus that could be used on a day-to-day basis. Hell, we could just not have that fee increase at all.?

Though the center is still in the developmental stages, there are some features that are likely to be included. The current plans allocate 8,084 square feet for a multi-activity court that can be used for basketball, volleyball, badminton and other indoor sports.

Additionally, 18,000 square feet are committed to a weight and fitness space, and 5,500 will be apportioned for three multi-purpose group fitness studios, according to the most recent site analysis report.

?Nothing is finalized yet. We?re still in the early stages,? Byrd said. ?A lot can change between now and 2015.?

In addition to recreational and wellness-based features, the plan also allows for 13,180 square feet for events space, including a floor space, stage and other related components.

?I want a place where students can socialize and have that student experience, a chance to get away from academics and take a break from studying and enjoy physical activity and socializing with friends,? said Ryan Fetzer, intramural and sports club coordinator.

Dalpe maintains that many of the decisions will ultimately come down to the students, as they were the ones who expressed a need for a new recreation center.

?The reason this fee is in place is because we did listen to students,? Dalpe said. ?You?ll be paying into it but you won?t have the luxury of using it. Students have to extend themselves for the future of (the) campus and students.?

Sensitivity Evaluation of ?Laser-induced ... - Cancer Research Center

Cancer Research

[Abstract]

Colorectal cancer is the most familiar disease in clinic, whose occurrence and development has close relationship with environment, heredity, life style etc. In recent years, incidence of colorectal cancer has the trend of increasing. It is reported that the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer rank No.2 internationally and No.4 in our country. Thus it has brought about wide attention from clinical workers.Early colorectal cancer has no differential symptoms. Patients commonly have some change functions of digesting like few hemafecia, constipation, diarrhea etc, which could not draw patients? attention. Only after aggravation of hemafecia?obstruction of alimentary tract or acute decrease of weight did the patients hospitalize. Owing to the influence of clinical workers? experience and patients? fear of the traditional examining methods, the rate of misdiagnosis and missed-diagnosis is high. Early colorectal cancer has high resecting rate if timely diagnosed. Patients will have high five-year surviving rate after operation. So development of sensitive and safe diagnosing system for early colorectal cancer has high clinical value.Laser-induced autofluorescence diagnosing instrument for early colorectal cancer was devised for the above purpose. Our center has made great achievements after we received this project. On the basis research of related mechanism about autofluorescence and pathological changes occurred in patients with cancer, ?Second generation laser-induced autofluorescence diagnosing instrument for early colorectal cancer? was successfully developed in 2004.In my tests, I had firstly done some work to get the standard spectrum of protoporphyrin IX and to analyse its change in cancer tissue and patients? blood to get the relationship between protoporphyrin IX and cancer occurrence, resulting that protoporphyrin DC can be used as one kind of the standards for early cancer diagnosis; then I did the clinical work to appraise specificity and sensitivity of our instrument. At last, I have used digital image process software ?Peakfit? to deal with the resultant spectrum to achieve the quantitive disposal of autofluorescence speatra combining research of standard spectrum of protoporphyrin IX, to offer primary research for later construction of database and the achievement of intellectualized diagnosis.

Cochlear implants may be safe, effective for organ transplant patients

ScienceDaily (Feb. 10, 2012) ? Cochlear implants may be a safe, effective option for some organ transplant patients who've lost their hearing as an unfortunate consequence of their transplant-related drug regime, researchers report.

The antibiotics and immunosuppressive drugs required by organ transplant patients can cause deafness, said Dr. Brian J. McKinnon, otologist and neurotologist at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University.

Antibiotics can destroy the finite number of dark cells in the inner ear. These cells produce the minute amount of fluid needed to help convert sound waves to neural impulses the brain can interpret. Apparently these dark cells are very metabolically active and antibiotics are designed to interfere with bacteria's metabolic activity.

"When you destroy the ability to make fluid, the system no longer functions," McKinnon said. Any sound patients may hear is incomprehensible.

Drugs that keep the immune system from attacking a transplanted organ can also leave the inner ear vulnerable to infection. In fact, cochlear implant patients typically get vaccinations to bolster their immune response to common infections since an electrode, connecting the device to the inner ear, can become a highway for bacteria and viruses. "If you do make the immune system work better, they may reject their organ," McKinnon notes.

Consequently, only a few transplant patients worldwide have gotten cochlear implants.

However, the new, small retrospective study provides more evidence that patients can restore their hearing without additional health risks if they wait at least six months after the organ transplant and take the right antibiotic before and after the cochlear implant procedure, McKinnon said. He and Dr. Kenneth C. Iverson, Chief Resident in otolaryngology at MCG, are co-authors of the study published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology. Two previous studies described experience with less than a dozen total patients.

The GHSU study focuses on two patients, including a 47-year-old woman who developed profound hearing loss five years after receiving a kidney from a living family member when a severe infection put her in intensive care and required several powerful antibiotics. She received a cochlear implant 18 months after the infection and six years after her transplant; her treatment included an intravenous antibiotic before the surgery and an oral antibiotic for a week afterward as well as continuation of her usual transplant-related medications. Her hearing was essentially normal 13 months later. She died two years after her implant from an unrelated health problem.

A 50-year-old man, who received a kidney from a deceased donor, experienced profound hearing loss six weeks after a severe brain infection. He received a cochlear implant seven months after his transplant and similar antibiotic therapy. About 75 percent of his hearing was restored 14 months later.

"This study adds to the growing evidence that successful cochlear implantation can be achieved in appropriately selected renal transplant patients," McKinnon and Iverson write. They have continued to use the device selectively in transplant patients and plan a larger, retrospective study.

Cochlear implants, which today are less than an inch in diameter, are placed behind the ear in between the scalp and skull. A short lead is inserted through the skull to the inner ear, located near the base of the brain. The devices are used in patients when other methods, such as traditional hearing aids, have failed. The device is costly and often not fully covered by private or federal health insurance, which has limited its use.

About 20 adults per 100,000 are deaf by the time they reach their senior years, primarily as a result of infections or repeated exposure to loud noise; 1-2 children per 1,000 are born with hearing loss.

Huntington picks Kevin Salatino to head its art collections - latimes ...

Thornton Portrait Gallery at Huntington by Gary Friedman
Kevin Salatino, director of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick, Maine, was named Thursday as the next director of art collections at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino.?

Salatino, 55, will succeed John Murdoch, who is retiring in June after 10 years as head of the art collections. When he begins at the Huntington this summer, Salatino will achieve a possibly unprecedented trifecta -- it appears that no other curator or director has served on the staffs of L.A.'s three biggest visual art institutions.

From 1991 to 2000, Salatino was curator of graphic arts at the Getty Research Institution, part of L.A.?s (and the world?s) richest visual art institution, the J. Paul Getty Trust. Then he spent nine years as curator and head of the prints and drawings department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, leaving to lead the Bowdoin museum in 2009.

Salatino said Thursday that he couldn?t think offhand of any other curators or directors who?ve worked at the Getty, LACMA and the Huntington. And Huntington spokeswoman Thea Page said that Shelley Bennett, a former art curator and now senior research associate who has been at the Huntington since 1980 -- two years before the Getty Trust was established -- could not recall a previous art curator or collections director of the Huntington who?d also worked at both the Getty and LACMA.

Raised in Stamford, Conn., and schooled at Columbia University in New York and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Salatino spoke enthusiastically over the phone from Maine about his impending return to L.A.

?It took me about six years [as an Angeleno] to go from a love-hate relationship to a pure love relationship,? he said.? ?After 19 years I said it would be nice to have a change. Maine is a wonderful place, but I?ve missed Los Angeles terribly. I feel like it?s a homecoming.?

Steven Koblik, the Huntington?s president, said that Murdoch has led a move toward more ambitious art exhibitions, and a big part of Salatino?s job will be carrying that forward while capitalizing on the extensive building improvements of the past decade. They include new galleries for changing exhibitions and American art, and the renovation of the Huntington Art Gallery, home to the collection's signature British paintings.?

?It?s a great opportunity for Kevin to come into this environment where space is not the big issue,? Koblik said. ?Collection development, exhibitions and staff development are critical parts of what he?ll be addressing. We will be able to look at them in a way we haven?t before.?

Kevin Salatino art collections director of HuntingtonSalatino will bring a proven knack for scholarly showmanship.? At LACMA in 2008, he delivered a lecture about scatalogy and longing in the Art of James Ensor, which focused on the Belgian painter?s ?Doctrinal Nourishment,? a rear view of five clergymen defecating into a trench.

?That?s the only lecture I?ve given without sex in the title,? Salatino said with a laugh. ?I love to give very serious lectures with outrageous titles, because they bring people in.?

Among his talks have been ?Sex and Death: One Curator?s Odyssey Through the Underworld? at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, ?Sex and the Eternal City: The Grand Tour?s Erotic Pilgrimage? given in 2002 at the Getty, and ?From Louis XIV to Grace of Monaco: Toward an Erotics of Fireworks? at the Louvre in 2003. The convergence of fireworks and art has been on Salatino?s mind since at least 1997, when he curated the exhibition ?Incendiary Art: The Representation of Fireworks in Early Modern Europe? at the Getty.

Koblik said that while Salatino was at the Huntington for a job interview in December, he lectured on one of the portraits in its collection, ?The Western Brothers" by John Singleton Copley. ?There wasn?t any sex in the title, but there was plenty in the presentation,? Koblik said. ?We know his penchant for that, and we think it?s a wonderful way to engage people.?

To that end, Salatino said, he can hardly wait to dig into the Huntington?s impressive collection of British 18th century portraiture (Copley included) -- with an eye toward exploiting the public?s neverending interest in sex to further its understanding of art.

?The 18th century is the great century of erotics," he said. "Those are the most rakish people anywhere. They?re fascinating portraits, highly sexualized in many ways, and they should be as fascinating to young people as to hoary old folks like me. Museum directors are always looking to bring the next generation in, and those are the kinds of pictures that can be made very accessible very quickly.?

Koblik noted that Salatino?s deep expertise in graphic art and works on paper dovetails well with another major department of the Huntington: the library, which houses many documents that are in themselves works of art. Exhibitions reflecting the combined scholarship of the art and library staffs are a goal.

?We?ve really begun to emphasize the cross-fertilization between all three of our collection areas,? Koblik said -- looking for tie-ins not only between artworks and historical books and documents, but with the gardens as well. Information placards might note which paintings or science books on display indoors deal with a given plant species that?s on view outside.

Best Analyzes Impact of Flood Losses on Thai Insurance Industry ...

A.M. Best Co. has released a briefing that provides updated estimates of insurers? losses from the Thailand floods. The overall industry wide insurers? loss estimates from the floods have increased 50 percent to $15 billion since Best?s last briefing on this event, published Nov. 23, 2011. ?Such a loss would place the Thai floods in a tie for the fifth costliest insured loss event in the past 31 years,? Best said.

But the insured losses are only part of the story. Best cited a study from Aon Benfield, which estimates that the floods in Thailand ?have damaged or destroyed more than 4 million homes, businesses and manufacturing facilities.? The amount of structural damage is actually ?four times greater than what resulted from Japan?s earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, but only half of the total insured loss due to a low rate of insurance adoption.?

How to assess business interruption (BI) claims and contingent business interruption (CBI) claims, which are based on supply chain interruption, rather than actual property losses, remains a conundrum.

Best explained: ?Insured parties have several limitations on their ability to make CBI claims. If property insurance does not cover a certain peril, then related CBI claims will not be covered. Insurers could encounter reinstatement issues and face problems on first-loss limits from firms with multiple locations, as dates of damage vary for different industrial estates. Event limits were not always specified in Thai insurance contracts. Classifying the floods as multiple events could increase costs for the insurers/reinsurers that are involved. Many impacted companies moved to Thailand to mitigate losses from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. As a result there are increasingly complex ?causation and adjustment issues.?

?Best noted that until recently ?flood coverage for most industrial and large commercial companies was automatically included in the industrial all risk (IAR) policies, with almost
100 percent of the sum covered.?

That is in the process of being changed drastically. Guy Carpenter noted that at January renewals there ?was widespread interest in imposing limits on proportional treaties.? Willis Re stated that ?besides capping proportional treaties, there were no immediate significant changes to underwriting.?

However, Best said the Thai commercial insurance industry ?will likely begin facing sharply contracted capacity, higher pricing and tighter terms for coverage with the Asian and Japanese reinsurance renewals in April. In 2012, flood coverage will be separated from IAR policies.

?Flood policy premiums are expected to double or triple from previous levels, while the renewal and expansion of excess-of-loss protection has driven rate increases ranging from 500 percent to 1,000 percent.? Policy limitations on coverage amounts available for specific types of loss are likely to be cut by between 10 and 20 percent of the sum insured. Deductibles of 10 percent are likely to follow.

In conclusion best underscored that the ?unprecedented flooding has forever changed the perception of risk in Thailand and brought about significant changes to the Thai insurance industry.? The rating agency foresees more ?mergers, acquisitions and deals,? as companies look for ways to offset heavy losses.

In addition Best said that ?given the overall uncertainties and previous experience with other significant, un-modeled losses,? it expects to see additional upward revisions to initial loss estimates and feels that the amount of the total insured loss could change ? ?a situation that it will be closely monitoring.?

Super Bowl XLVI Serves a Record 2.1 Million Live Streams (Mashable)

More than 2.1 million viewers watched Super Bowl XLVI via live streams. While this paled in comparison to the game's record-breaking 111.3 million broadcast viewers, it still set a viewership record for online sporting streams. NBC tells the Associated Press that the Super Bowl was the "most-watched single-game sports event online."

[More from Mashable: The Top 15 Tweets-Per-Second Records]

NBC and the NFL have been streaming certain games online since 2009 but this was the first time that the season's grand finale was available. Verizon and Bell Canada customers were also able to enjoy the game using mobile apps.

Network policy company Sandvine's traffic statistics show that 6.2% of downstream network traffic at 9pm on Sunday was dedicated to NBCSports.com. That's the type of traffic usually reserved for the Internet's biggest websites, according to Sandvine. (See chart for details.)

[More from Mashable: 20 Best (or Most Annoying) Animated Super Bowl GIFs]

But while NBCSports.com and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter featured surges in traffic, Internet usage as a whole was down for the night, thanks to the large number of people tuned into the game on TV. In fact, Sandvine's traffic charts show that Netflix usage in North America dropped by up to 40% on Sunday night.

When users were online, many used phones or tablets. Google's Mobile Ads Blog reports that mobile devices accounted for 41% of searches for Super Bowl TV ads during the game itself. (See Google chart for details.)

Top terms, including "Madonna" and "Clint Eastwood" were huge winners in mobile and tablet search. In fact, Google reports that smartphone searches for Clint Eastwood were up 5,500% during the game.

This reinforces the growing trend toward second screen viewing. As a Nielsen study recently pointed out, nearly half of all smartphone and tablet users employ their devices while watching TV.

We've known that sports are big performers in the social TV space. One nice thing about major events like the Super Bowl is that they can help set trends for other types of programming.

Did you watch the Super Bowl online or use your phone or tablet while watching the game on TV? Let us know in the comments.

Hypertension Prevention

Published by Sherry | February 8, 2012 | | 6

Just like other deadly diseases, hypertension usually attacks with little or no warning at all. Because of that, most people die without putting up a fight against this nemesis. That shouldn?t be the case anymore. Learn how to prevent hypertension altogether so that you can save yourself time and money buying expensive medication.?

The phrase ?Watch what you eat? should be your personal motto if you want hypertension to say away from you. Hypertension is often a result of choosing to include the wrong foods such as processed foods that are high in LDL and salt in your diet. Eliminate these food groups totally and replace them with fiber-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables.

Drinking alcohol is not entirely bad for your health. In fact, doctors advise people to drink red wine for better blood circulation. What makes drinking alcohol wrong is when you?re drinking all the time like there?s no tomorrow.

Alcohol promotes weight gain which increases your risk for hypertension. Limit your alcohol consumption to at least once or twice a month.

Along with limiting your alcohol consumption, why not limit smoking or better yet not smoke in the first place? Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, a substance that causes poor blood circulation by causing blood vessels to narrow. You do not only lower your risk for hypertension when you quit smoking, you also save your heart and your lungs.

Some experts claim that food and alcohol can only contribute a little to high blood pressure and that it is stress that we should be aware of. That is not surprising at all since recent studies have proven that stress can actually cause the arteries to constrict. Manage stress by getting enough exercise and rest.

Aside from healthy eating, regular exercise, adequate rest and a smoke and alcohol free lifestyle, hypertension can be prevented or managed through regular visits to the nearest clinic. Having your blood pressure checked regularly will greatly help you detect early signs of other medical conditions aside from hypertension.

Make way for the worst reality TV players

Kate Gosselin on "Dancing With the Stars," Marcel Vigneron of "Top Chef" and NaOnka Mixon of "Survivor: Nicaragua."

By Anna Chan and Ree Hines

There?s nothing like a reality TV villain to inspire bad words from good viewers. Just see the comments that Conda Britt -- who?s been busy making her eye-rolling, complaint-filled presence known on ?The Biggest Loser? this season -- has brought out from some of our Facebook pals.

?OMG I want to smack her.? ?I can?t stand Conda.? ?(She?s) a total b-----...?

You get the idea.

Of course, Conda?s just the latest in a long line of reality TV contestants to get us gabbing. Long before she started bad-mouthing fellow players and backtalking her trainer (seriously, Conda, show Dolvett Quince some respect), plenty of other hot heads earned their spots on our worst-players-ever list.

Here are a few of our top contenders:

NaOnka Mixon (?Survivor: Nicaragua?): If you thought ?King Troll? Russell Hantz and Jonny Fairplay were bad, all thoughts of those two men were banished once you witnessed NaOnka?s atrocious behavior on the show. She spouted hateful comments toward her fellow players, stole and hid food from the tribe, knocked over a woman who wore a prosthetic leg and more. Then, SHE QUIT THE GAME! And it didn?t end there. Even after her season aired, she refused to apologize for her actions, telling E! Online, ?I played the game exactly the way I said I would at the beginning: I would lie, cheat and steal, I would be faker than faux fur, I would pretend to be your friend and stab you in the back. I lived up to that.? All righty, then.

Kate Gosselin (?Dancing With the Stars? season 10): When it comes to bad attitudes on ?DWTS,? the reality TV mom takes the cake. (Although Bristol Palin does deserve an honorable mention.) The problems allegedly started even before the season did. Her pro partner, Tony Dovolani, reportedly complained that ?she doesn?t listen and can?t take direction.? (Well, no wonder she moved like a mannequin on the dance floor.)? Her bossy and argumentative ways in rehearsals quickly got to the usually patient and encouraging pro, who was so fed up by week two he (temporarily) quit the show during their practice. During her long, five-week stint on the ballroom bash, Kate also put her whininess, combativeness and weepiness on full display, and even her most ardent supporters couldn?t stand to phone in their votes for her anymore to keep her dancing.

Marcel Vigneron (?Top Chef? season 2 and?All-Stars): Some may remember Marcel as the master jerk, er, master cook who harangued his fellow contestants on the second season of ?Top Chef,? while others might remember him as the returning jer--chef who baited his competition during the show?s all-star season. But no matter where you remember him from, you?re bound to remember his bad attitude and big ego -- and his foam. ?Yes, the only thing more annoying than Marcel?s bleep-packed outbursts (which, FYI, are far more tolerable when set to music) was his commitment to smother otherwise appetizing meals in that?always-unappealing foam.

Gretchen Jones (?Project Runway? season 8): OK, let?s just put aside her totally flabbergasting win (featuring granny panties?... granny panties, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia!) over the genuinely brilliant Mondo for the sake of this argument. Let?s stick to her?-- as many recappers noted?--?Grinch-like personality: She was bossy, controlling, whiny, conceited, belligerent, manipulative and, as fellow contestant April declared, two-faced. (April also called her Hitler, but even we admit that was going a tad too far.) And you know someone?s a total jerk when even the always charming and kind mentor Tim Gunn couldn?t stand her behavior anymore and gave her a smackdown in front of everyone.

Courtney Robertson (?The Bachelor? season 16): Of course, Gunn isn?t the only litmus test one can use to tell a true baddie. When Ellen DeGeneres, aka the current queen of daytime and the nicest of ?American Idol?s? former nice guys, doesn?t like someone, well, that kind of says it all. And Ellen hasn?t been shy in expressing her dislike for Courtney. It?s Courtney?s?in-it-to-win-it (at any cost) attitude that?has many of the show?s fans (like Ellen) and former contestants (like Jennifer Fritsch) ready to see her go roseless and leave the show. ?Bachelor? Ben Flajnik, on the other hand, seems perfectly content with the manipulative skinny-dipper.

Jonathan Baker and Victoria Fuller (?Amazing Race,? ?Fear Factor?): These two aren?t just the worst pair to ever pull up to a pit stop on ?The Amazing Race?; they might just be the worst duo in reality TV history. Jonathan made his memorable ?TAR? mark after he shoved Victoria -- yes, actually shoved his wife -- because she dared to pick up his discarded backpack and made them several seconds late to the mat. How did he console his weeping wife after that? By reminding her, ?This is a race! This isn?t about compassion!? Sigh. But lest anyone worry about Victoria, an episode of ?Fear Factor? later revealed that the (former) couple was in fact a perfect match. After some heckling from Jonny Fairplay, the former Playboy playmate punched the ex-?Survivor.? Not to be outdone, Jonathan ended up tussling with host Joe Rogan. Really.

Vicky Vilcan (?The Biggest Loser? season 6): Conda may be the ?Loser? that has fans in a tizzy now, but it was once Vicky (with more than a little help from her in-game BFF Heba Salama) who earned all the ire. She was the contestant trainer Bob Harper called ?Shakespearean? due to her?over-the-top, manipulative ways. If there was?drama to be stirred, she was ready and willing. See, Vicky was all about the game and winning it any way she could. (Well, she was also all about eye-rolling and sneering, but Conda may soon snag top ?Loser? honors there.) That?s why Bob also called her the biggest game player in the history of the show.? As for what "Loser" fans called her, well, the less said about that the better.
