Exclusive: Boston bomb suspects' parents retreat to village, cancel U.S. trip

By Maria Golovnina

UNDISCLOSED LOCATION IN NORTH CAUCASUS, Russia (Reuters) - The parents of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects have retreated to a village in southern Russia to shelter from the spotlight and abandoned plans for now to travel to the United States, the father of the suspects told Reuters on Sunday.

Speaking in the garden of a large house, Anzor Tsarnaev said he believed he would not be allowed to see his surviving son Dzhokhar?, who was captured and has been charged in connection with the April 15 bomb blasts that killed three people and wounded 264.

"Unfortunately I can't help my child in any way. I am in touch with Dzhokhar's and my own lawyers. They told me they would let me know (what to do)," Tsarnaev said in an interview in the village where he relocated with the suspects' mother.

He agreed to the face-to-face meeting on condition that the village's location in the North Caucasus, a string of mainly Muslim provinces in southern Russia, not be disclosed.

"I am not going back to the United States. For now I am here. I am ill," said Tsarnaev, pacing nervously in the garden at sunset in the quiet village set in rolling hills and surrounded by cow pastures.

His face gaunt and tired, Tsarnaev said he suffered from high blood pressure and a heart condition.

Tsarnaev had said in the North Caucasus province of Dagestan on Thursday that he planned to travel to the United States to see Dzhokhar and bury his elder son, Tamerlan, who was killed during a manhunt four days after the bombings.

In Sunday's interview he said he had decided to move away from the family home in Dagestan to the new location because he wanted to keep a low profile.

Dressed in a black shirt and black trousers, he passionately defended his sons' innocence, saying they had nothing to do with Islamist extremists.

"I feel hopeless. We are simple people. We are trying to understand. We are attacked from all sides," he said, clutching his head in despair.

"I don't know whether I should talk or stay silent. I don't want to harm my child. ... We are used to all sorts of things here but we didn't expect this from the United States."

He and other members of the family believe a man shown on television being led naked into a police car the night of the shootout was Tamerlan, and that the blurry footage, still widely available on YouTube, proves Tamerlan was captured alive. Boston police say Tamerlan was killed in a shootout, and the man seen being led into the car was a bystander who was briefly detained.

Anzor Tsarnaev said he raised the issue with U.S. officials who visited him earlier in the week in his home in Dagestan.

"I asked them: 'I saw my child alive, he was being put into a police vehicle alive and healthy. How come media said he was killed?' They were shocked themselves," the father said.

CAUCASUS ROOTS

The Tsarnaevs are ethnic Chechens who lived in the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan and in Dagestan before emigrating to the United States with their children. The parents returned to Dagestan two years ago, and Tamerlan spent the first half of 2012 there.

The suspects' mother, Zubeidat, was with Anzor Tsarnaev in the village but did not wish to speak.

"She is ill, she is shocked, she is depressed. She lost her children," Tsarnaev said. The couple are divorced but have stayed together.

Although the Tsarnaev brothers have roots in Dagestan and neighboring Chechnya, neither had spent much time there until Tamerlan returned to Dagestan last year for six months.

During his interview, Anzor Tsarnaev denied Tamerlan had any contact with militants during his stay, painting an idyllic picture of his son's visit to his ancestral homeland.

"When he came to stay here, he was a good boy. He read books, (Leo) Tolstoy, (Alexandre) Dumas and thick English language books. He would wake up late and read all day, late into the night," he said.

"Sometimes we went to the mosque. We went to see our relatives, in Dagestan, in Chechnya. We visited a lot of households, it was a nice atmosphere."

Tsarnaev said he had to force his son to return to the United States to complete his U.S. citizenship application after Tamerlan tried to convince his family to allow him to stay in Dagestan for good.

"I told him: 'No, you have to go back to obtain your U.S. citizenship'. I forced him to go back. I thought it was the right thing to do. I shouldn't have done that," he said with a pained expression on his face.

The father said he had no hope that Tamerlan's body would be released by the U.S. authorities to be buried in his homeland.

"They won't give us his body," he said, his voice breaking with emotion. "We wont be able to bury him in our land."

Conversion from 'bad' fat to good fat

Apr. 28, 2013 ? Scientists from ETH Zurich have shown for the first time that brown and white fat cells in a living organism can be converted from one cell type to the other. Their work, using mice as a model organism, provides important new insights into the origin of brown fat cells, which is a prerequisite for the development of successful anti-obesity therapies.

Two types of fat cells can be found in mammals and hence in humans: White fat cells function mainly as highly flexible energy stores which are filled in times of calorie abundance. The fat is stored in the form of lipid droplets, which are mobilized when energy is needed. Diametrically opposed in function are the so-called brown adipocytes: These cells specialize in burning energy in the form of fat and sugar to produce heat. New-born babies possess substantial amounts of brown fat and utilize it to maintain body temperature. Since it was recently shown that brown adipocytes also exist in adult humans, research has focused on understanding how brown adipocytes are formed. The ultimate goal of these efforts is to increase brown adipocyte number and activity in obese humans, allowing them to burn excess calories and thus reduce weight.

Against the current belief

It is known that both humans and mice can adapt to cold temperatures by forming brown fat cells within their white fat depots. These cells are called "brite" fat cells (brown-in-white) and are less common at warmer versus colder temperatures. However, the origin of these special brown adipocytes has remained a matter of debate. The prevalent hypothesis was that brite cells are formed from special precursor cells and are removed when no longer needed. The alternate idea of a direct interconversion between white and brown fat cells gained less attention. By demonstrating that this interconversion does occur and is one of the main contributors to brite fat cell formation, the current belief has been challenged.

Genetically labelled fat cells

To demonstrate how brite fat cells are formed the researchers in the laboratory of Christian Wolfrum, a professor at the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health, generated mice that allowed them to genetically label specific fat cells. These animals were kept in a changing environment: starting at 8?C for a week and for several weeks afterwards at normal room temperature. During the cold exposure, the mice formed brown adipocytes in their white fat depots -- a process called "britening." After warm adaptation the fat tissue turned white again. Using the genetic markers the scientists concluded from these experiments that white fat cells can convert into brown fat cells and vice versa. As humans have the same type of cells as mice it is likely that the same process occurs in humans upon cold stimulation.

Treatments against obesity

"To develop new treatment strategies we need to find ways to convert white into brown adipocytes," says Wolfrum. Most of the research has focused on identifying the precursor cells for brown fat cells, an approach that may be insufficient. Future work will address the question of how to manipulate this interconversion process either by pharmacological or by nutritional means.

This approach would represent a novel strategy. "Current anti-obesity therapies target the energy intake side of the equation by controlling appetite and the uptake of nutrients," says Wolfrum. The pharmacological treatments that are available are not very efficient and usually are associated with side effects. In contrast, this novel approach to treat obesity would target the energy expenditure side of the equation by promoting brown fat formation.

Per-student pre-K spending lowest in decade

WASHINGTON (AP) ? State funding for pre-kindergarten programs had its largest drop ever last year and states are now spending less per child than they did a decade ago, according to a report released Monday.

The report also found that more than a half million of those preschool students are in programs that don't even meet standards suggested by industry experts that would qualify for federal dollars.

Those findings ? combined with Congress' reluctance to spend new dollars ? complicate President Barack Obama's effort to expand pre-K programs across the country. While Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius continue to promote the president's proposal, researchers say existing programs are inadequate, and until their shortcomings are fixed there is little desire by lawmakers to get behind Obama's call for more preschool.

"The state of preschool was a state of emergency," said Steven Barnett, director of the National Institute for Early Education Research at Rutgers University, which produced the report.

During his State of the Union speech, Obama proposed a federal-state partnership that would dramatically expand options for families with young children. Obama's plan would fund public preschool for any 4-year-old whose family income was below twice the federal poverty rate.

If it were in place this year, the plan would allow a family of four with two children to enroll students in a pre-K program if the family earned less than $46,566.

Students from families who earn more could participate in the program, but their parents would have to pay tuition based on their income. Eventually, 3-year-old students would be part of the program, too.

As part of his budget request, Obama proposed spending $75 billion over 10 years to help states get these new programs up and running. During the first years, Washington would pick up the majority of the cost before shifting costs to states.

"It's the most significant opportunity to expand access to pre-K that this nation has ever seen," Barnett said of the president's proposal.

Obama proposed paying for this expansion by almost doubling the federal tax on cigarettes, to $1.95 per pack.

Obama's pre-K plan faces a tough uphill climb, though, with the tobacco industry opposing the tax that would pay for it and lawmakers from tobacco-producing states also skeptical. Conservative lawmakers have balked at starting another government program, as well. Obama's Democratic allies are clamoring to make it a priority.

To help it along, Duncan and Sebelius planned to join the report's researchers on Monday at a news conference to introduce the report, along with administration allies. They planned events later in the week to reiterate their support.

Yet those public events were unlikely to sway lawmakers who are already fighting among themselves over spending cuts that are forcing students to be dropped from existing preschool programs, the levying of higher fees for student loans and deep cuts for aid to military schools.

States spent about $5.1 billion on pre-K programs in 2011-12, the most recent school year, researchers wrote in the report.

Per-student funding for existing programs during that year dropped to an average of $3,841 for each student. It was the first time average spending per student dropped below $4,000 in today's dollars since researchers started tracking it during the 2001-02 academic year.

Adjusted for inflation, per-student funding has been cut by more than $1,000 during the last decade.

Yet nationwide, the amounts were widely varied. The District of Columbia spent almost $14,000 on every child in its program while the states of Colorado, South Carolina and Nebraska spent less than $2,000 per child.

"Whether you get a quality preschool program does depend on what ZIP code you are in," Barnett said.

Among the 40 states that offer state-funded pre-K programs, 27 cut per-student spending last year. In total, that meant $548 million in cuts.

Money, of course, is not a guarantee for students' success. But students from poor schools generally lag students from better-funded counterparts and those students from impoverished families arrive in kindergarten less prepared than others.

In all, only 15 states and the District of Columbia spent enough money to provide quality programs, the researchers concluded. Those programs serve about 20 percent of the 1.3 million enrolled in state-funded prekindergarten programs.

"In far too many states, funding levels have fallen so low as to bring into question the effectiveness of their programs by any reasonable standard," researchers wrote.

Part of the reason for the decreased spending are the lingering effects of the economic downturn in 2008, coupled with the end of federal stimulus dollars to plug state budgets.

"Although the recession is technically over, the recovery in state revenues has lagged the recovery of the general economy and has been slower and weaker than following prior recessions. This does not bode well for digging back out of the hole created by years of cuts," the researchers wrote in their report.

Nationally, 42 percent of students ? or more than a half million students ? were in programs that met fewer than half of the benchmarks researchers identified as important to gauging a program's effectiveness, such as classrooms with fewer than 20 students and teachers with bachelor's degrees.

That, too, suggests problems for Obama's plan to expand pre-K programs, especially if Washington insists its partners meet quality benchmarks to win federal dollars.

Yahoo chairman joins recent boardroom exodus

(AP) ? Yahoo could use a revolving door in its boardroom.

In the latest exit, Chairman Alfred Amoroso will become the eighth Yahoo Inc. director to depart since early last year. He will leave the board on June 25 at Yahoo Inc.'s annual shareholders meeting, the company said Thursday.

Amoroso, 63, is giving up the chairmanship immediately, prompting Yahoo to appoint Maynard Webb Jr. to handle the duties on an interim basis.

Yahoo indicated it won't add another director after Amoroso departs, leaving the Internet company with 10 directors.

Amoroso and Webb joined Yahoo's board 14 months ago when four longtime directors stepped down under shareholder pressure. Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang had gotten the exodus started when he left the board a month earlier. Finally, late last year, Intuit Inc. CEO Brad Smith and Weather Channel CEO David Kenny stepped down.

Former accounting executive Sue James is now Yahoo's longest-serving director. She came on board three years ago. The other directors, including Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, have been appointed since February 2012.

The rapid turnover probably suits Mayer, who has been trying to infuse Yahoo with new talent and ideas since she defected from a longtime job at Google Inc. to tackle the challenge of turning around one of the Internet's best-known companies.

Although Yahoo's website remains one of the Internet's top destinations, Web surfers had been visiting less frequently and staying for shorter periods. That problem has made it more difficult for Yahoo to sell the online advertising that generates most of its revenue.

Until a slight increase last year, Yahoo's revenue had been steadily declining since 2008 while rivals such as Google and Facebook Inc. reveled in robust growth. The financial funk exasperated Yahoo shareholders, triggering a backlash that ultimately reshaped the board. One of the dissident shareholders, hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, won a board seat, along with two of his allies, turnaround specialist Harry Wilson and MTV executive Michael Wolf.

Amoroso became Yahoo's chairman 11 months ago after the company parted ways with one of its former CEOs, Scott Thompson, in a flap over a fabricated academic degree listed on Thompson's official bio. In a Thursday statement, Amoroso said he only intended to serve as chairman for a year.

After dumping Thompson, Yahoo's board lured Mayer away from Google, where she had worked for 13 years. Yahoo's stock has climbed by about 60 percent since Mayer became CEO last July. The shares dipped 1 cent to $25.19 in Thursday's extended trading.

Amoroso, former CEO of TV listings provider Rovi Corp, said he is proud of Yahoo's progress since he became chairman.

"In that time, Yahoo hired a great new CEO, brought on a fantastic management team, revitalized the employee base, and has begun to release top-notch new products," he said in a statement. "With Marissa at the helm and the leadership team in place, this is a natural time for me to transition off the board."

Mayer praised Amoroso as a "wonderful" chairman. "Fred's mentorship and perspective has proved truly valuable to me in my first few months here at Yahoo," she said in a statement.

Military shows off world's first crowdsourced tank design

How do you design a tank in the age of the Internet? Not by drawing up secret blueprints in underground labs, that's for sure. Instead, you make a huge toolbox available to thousands, and offer a million bucks to the one who comes up with the best design? That's what the Defense Department's research arm, DARPA, just did.

Ground Systems, a team of three people all living in different states, created the design shown here using DARPA's VehicleFORGE online tools. Thousands of parts, materials, and other parameters could be swapped out, tweaked, and modified in order to create a vehicle platform that would be powerful and efficient but also easy to build and repair.

The design isn't particularly futuristic itself, but shows how designing something as complex and powerful as tanks and weapons can be done effectively using Internet-era collaboration tools. Plus, the winning team pockets the cool million, as the design itself goes on to further testing by the military.

The "Fast, Adaptable, Next-Generation Ground Vehicle" (FANG) project opened for registration early last year, and the process of putting together teams and vehicles progressed slowly. Over 1,000 participants and 200 teams contributed, and all their work was evaluated using a rigorous set of requirements ? for instance, will this part require regular replacement, or be very expensive to manufacture?

As it turns out, the winning design looks a lot like the concept put forward by DARPA at the outset. But the point wasn't to design a science-fiction tank, but to make a drivetrain platform that meets basic needs in an affordable and innovative way.

The next step is for the platform to actually be built by DARPA's build team, iFab, based at Penn State University. If it succeeds in basic testing and manufacturing, it will be sent out for further evaluation at a facility in Michigan.

It's all part of the Tactical Technology Office's "Adaptable Vehicle Make" program, which is testing new methods for creating and testing systems like the FANG platform. If FANG proves successful, the process could potentially be applied to anything, from guns to aircraft.

Hagel: US committed to Israel's military edge

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) ? U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel assured Israel on Monday that the Obama administration is committed to preserving and improving the Jewish state's military edge in the Middle East.

Hagel, on his first visit to Israel as Pentagon chief, also declared that it is Israel's right to decide for itself whether to attack Iran to stop it from building a nuclear bomb.

Those two messages appeared to form the foundation of Hagel's effort to improve U.S. relations with Israel, which have been strained in recent years by obstacles to reviving Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and by the threat of an Iranian bomb.

Later, Hagel was flown in an Israeli Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter over northern Israel to view the Golan Heights, an area along the Syrian border that Israel captured during the 1967 Six-Day War.

The flight appeared to be aimed in part at impressing upon Hagel the narrow reaches of Israel and its vulnerability to troubled areas like Syria, which is in the midst of civil war.

An Israeli Defense Forces information packet provided to those who took the flight with Hagel noted that "the State of Nebraska is nine times the State of Israel." Hagel is a former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska.

At a joint news conference with Hagel prior to their flight, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon, said security in the Golan Heights is one of Israel's chief worries about Syria's turmoil.

In his appearance with Yaalon, Hagel was asked whether he believes it would be advisable for Israel to attack Iran on its own.

"That calculation has to be made by" Israel, he replied after noting, "Israel is a sovereign nation; every sovereign nation has a right to defend itself."

Hagel did not mention a concern that U.S. officials have voiced in the past, namely, that an Israeli strike would run the risk of igniting a wider war that could draw in the United States.

As evidence of Washington's commitment to preserving Israel's so-called qualitative military edge in the Mideast, Hagel said the U.S. will permit Israel to buy various new weapons, including U.S. missiles and advanced radars for its strike aircraft.

"We are committed to providing Israel with whatever support is necessary for Israel to maintain military superiority over any state or coalition of states and non-state actors," Hagel said.

Yaalon was asked about reports that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons in its struggle against rebel forces.

He did not specifically say whether Israel believes such weapons have been used, but he said that Syria must not cross the "red line" of allowing any chemical weapons to fall into the hands of what Yaalon called "rogue elements."

He said that "red line" has not yet been crossed.

FBI: US teen tried to join al Qaeda-linked Syrian group

By Alex Dobuzinskis, Reuters

An 18-year-old Chicago-area man accused of planning to join an al Qaeda-linked group fighting in Syria has been arrested by the FBI, the agency said on Saturday.

Abdella Ahmad Tounisi of Aurora, Illinois, was taken into custody late on Friday as he prepared to board a plane at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport bound for Turkey, the FBI said in a statement.

It added that Tounisi was a friend of Adel Daoud, an American accused of trying to stage a bombing outside a downtown Chicago bar last year. The agency said Tounisi had not been involved in that plot.

Tounisi appeared before a U.S. magistrate on Saturday on one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He was ordered held until his next court appearance on Tuesday, the FBI said.

A criminal complaint accused Tounisi of making online contact in March with a person he thought was a recruiter for Jabhat al-Nusrah, the militant Islamist Syrian group that the U.S. government calls a foreign terrorist organization operating as a wing of al Qaeda in Iraq.

The supposed recruiter was an FBI employee working undercover, the agency said.

Tounisi said in emails to the FBI employee that he planned to get to Syria via Turkey and was willing to die in the Syrian struggle, the complaint said.

Syria is in the grips of a civil war that began in 2011 as a revolt against President Bashar Assad and has killed more than 70,000 people.

On April 10, Tounisi bought an airline ticket for a flight from Chicago to Istanbul. On Thursday, the undercover FBI employee gave him a bus ticket for travel from Istanbul to Gaziantep, Turkey, near the border with Syria, the complaint said.

Tounisi's attorney, Michael Madden, of the federal public defender program could not be reached for comment.

Tounisi faces a maximum of 15 years in prison if convicted.

The 2012 arrest of Daoud, 19, also involved his alleged communication with an undercover member of the FBI. The fake bomb that Daoud tried to detonate outside a Chicago bar was provided to him by an undercover FBI agent, authorities said.

Daoud was indicted on two counts of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and maliciously attempting to use an explosive to destroy a building. He pleaded not guilty in October in federal court.

Boston bombing suspects: What's known about Tsarnaev brothers so far?

Immigrants Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died Friday after a shootout with police, and?Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who remains at large, have lived in the Boston area for years. What may have prompted the Boston bombing remains a mystery.

By Peter Grier,?Staff writer / April 19, 2013

This combo of photos shows what the FBI is calling 'Suspect No. 1' (l.) and 'Suspect No. 2' (r.) walking through the crowd in Boston on Monday, before the explosions at the Boston Marathon.

The suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing case are brothers who appear to have roots in Chechnya, a region of Russia long roiled by Islamic insurgency. But they have lived in the United States for years, and law enforcement officials remain uncertain why they might have set explosives near the finish line of Boston?s iconic footrace and whether they have ties to any international terrorist organization.

Law enforcement sources identified the suspect killed overnight in a shootout with police as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was born in Russia. His younger brother Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, born in Kyrgyzstan, fled the scene and on Friday was the subject of a massive manhunt in the Boston suburbs.

According to NBC News, the Tsarnaev brothers entered the US with family in 2002 or 2003. Tamerlan Tsarnaev became a permanent resident in 2007.

Other reports indicated that the Tsarnaev family had stayed for a time in Kazakhstan prior to their emigration to America.

Tamerlan was ?Suspect No. 1? in the photos and video made public by the FBI on Thursday. He is seen in these images wearing a dark coat and a dark-colored baseball cap with a white stripe.

The elder brother was studying or has studied at Bunker Hill Community College, and hoped to be an engineer. He was an avid boxer who hoped to earn US citizenship by participating in the Olympics for the United States.

An album of images of Tamerlan Tsarnaev shot by photographer Johannes Hirn made this point with its title: ?Will Box for Passport.?

?Unless his native Chechnya becomes independent, Tamerlan says he would rather compete for the United States than for Russia,? Mr. Hirn wrote in one caption.

Other captions depict the elder Tsarnaev as a Muslim who abstains from alcohol and is bewildered by the immorality of the surrounding American culture.

Good content is the backbone of any solid Internet marketing strategy. Constantly analyze your content to make sure it is of the highest quality and exactly what visitors are looking for. It can also be helpful to have other people take a look at your content. There is nothing more valuable than a fresh perspective. Your visitors will read your articles if the grammar is correct and if they are interesting.

In your E-Zines and on your websites, be sure to use headlines often and effectively. These should have some pizzazz to them, so that you can catch your visitor?s attention. It even works to use graphics of your products instead of actual headlines. Graphics are sometimes more professional looking than headlines.

TIP! Your website?s look and performance are as crucial as an actual store?s. Take the time to visit your website to spot problems, update old information and add new graphics.

A glossary of technical terms is always a must-have for its obvious search engine potential. This is not only beneficial to others but to you also. Those who search for these specific terms will be directed to your website, resulting in higher site traffic.

Your competition is an excellent source of information about online marketing. Observe their successes as well as their mistakes and learn from them. Watching others is a great way to learn. Checking out competitors can help you avoid mistakes they?ve made and set yourself apart from them.

Choosing a good niche is key to having a successful Internet based business. A fan of Star Wars memorabilia will have little interest in buying classic baseball cards. People will look for what they need in areas that offer exactly what it is that they are looking for. So before you go rushing to advertise your business to whomever it may concern, make sure you narrow your focus in order to improve the end results.

Free Gifts

Provide free gifts to go along with purchases of your services and/or products to help customers feel respected. Rewarding customers is something that doesn?t get addressed enough in most Affiliate marketing campaigns. Although free gifts are expensive, the potential payoff in terms of customer loyalty can easily justify their cost.

You can?t succeed at Internet promotion without a great website. Be sure to test your website on a regular basis and eliminate bad links, broken graphics or glitches that might show up. If visitors have a hard time looking through your site, they will probably avoid purchasing anything from you.

TIP! When sending out a mailing list, make sure that it is personalized to the specific client. Many people are weary of getting endless impersonal email messages.

When using Internet marketing, use the word ?guarantee? in your ad. Your customers want to know they will not get ripped off if they purchase your product. Vary your guarantees according to what kind of product you offer. Try using a lifetime guarantee or even one for 90 days. Look at what you are selling, and select the guarantee that will fit best.

Putting ?guaranteed? in your marketing campaign is a guaranteed way to get results. People want to be reassured that there is no risk in purchasing a product from you. Customers value their hard-earned cash highly, and when they see a guarantee, they believe their chances of wasting their money are lower.

To get sales, you need to generate real leads. Real-time leads will unify both you and a potential customer during the moment in which this person is looking for product information. You get access to that customer the moment they request information about your products.

TIP! You can find many email marketing services that can help you succeed in internet marketing, but it?s better just to do it yourself. Once you learn the basics, you will be creating mass mailers, building mailing lists and running auto responders in a few easy steps.

Try offering a $1 sales promotion for new customers to snag new clients. You create a great buzz and promote strong traffic, and it boosts your product?s exposure. People will want to put more of your products in their cart if they find the site to their liking. Be sure you feel confident in what you are selling!

Website Marketing

In conclusion, many businesses use Website marketing to sell products and services. Website marketing uses methods such as search engine optimization and advertising to generate sales interest. If you remember the advice in this article, you can use Internet marketing to seriously boost interest in your own products and services.

(AP) ? Dick Van Dyke is seeing doctors for an undiagnosed health problem, and he's seeking advice online as well.

"My head bangs every time I lay down," the 87-year-old actor posted on his Twitter account. "I've had every test come back that I'm perfectly healthy. Anybody got any ideas?"

Bob Palmer, a spokesman for Van Dyke, said Thursday that he's undergoing tests for "cranial throbbing" that's causing him to lose sleep. The sensation occurs when Van Dyke lies down, and scans and other tests have yet to yield a diagnosis, Palmer said.

Van Dyke drew a number of responses to his tweet for help Wednesday, including questions about what's been done so far for the problem he described as stubborn.

"It has been going on for 7 years. I've had every test you can think of," he replied, including an MRI and spinal tap.

Van Dyke has a strong constitution and is otherwise OK, but the "fatigue factor has become acute," Palmer said. Until he receives a diagnosis and treatment plan he's been advised not to fly, and is resting at his Malibu home.

He was to accept an award next week from New York's 92nd Street Y but canceled the trip.

Van Dyke's credits include "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "Diagnosis Murder."

Tigers sneak past Mariners in 14 innings

SEATTLE (AP) - Brayan Pena knew the collision was coming. All that mattered was keeping grasp of the ball.

"It doesn't matter where your body is going to go, just hold onto the baseball," he said.

Pena, Detroit's catcher, held onto Prince Fielder's relay throw and absorbed a collision with Justin Smoak at home plate for the final out, and the Tigers outlasted the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in 14 innings Wednesday night.

Smoak singled with one out off Joaquin Benoit, and with two outs Dustin Ackley doubled into the right-field corner. Third base coach Jeff Datz didn't hesitate in waving Smoak around with the potential tying run.

Torii Hunter started the relay from the outfield, and Fielder's throw was up the third base line a bit. Pena, however, caught it in plenty of time and held onto the ball as Smoak crashed into him, sending a mask and helmet flying.

"I thought the game was tied," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said about Ackley's double. "And I also thought the third base coach made a great call. We have to execute it."

Lying face down in the dirt, Pena held up the ball in his bare hand to show plate umpire Bob Davidson and shook his fist in triumph before teammates helped him up.

"I got dizzy," Pena said. "I think he hit me in the chin as he was running toward me. I wanted (the umpire) to see it because I don't know his view."

The collision at the plate concluded a wild night when both starting pitchers, Felix Hernandez and Max Scherzer, were at the top of their games and the teams combined for a whopping 40 strikeouts.

Pena came through twice in the 14th inning for the Tigers. It was his bases-loaded grounder that allowed Don Kelly to score the go-ahead run in the top of the inning and it was his defensive gem that finally sent everyone home after 4 hours, 27 minutes.

"Nobody deserved to lose in a game like this," Pena said.

Drew Smyly (1-0), the seventh of eight Tigers pitchers, worked the 13th inning for the victory. Benoit earned his first save of the season.

According to the Mariners, it was the second time in major league history that both teams had more than 18 strikeouts. The only other time was June 16, 2001, when the Giants and Padres both struck out 20 times in a 15-inning game.

Detroit batters tied the team record for most strikeouts in a game with 21 - five by Fielder, who was hitless in six at-bats.

"I'm not much for those kind of records. All I know we are 2-0 the last two nights and that's all that matters, that column with the Ws and Ls," Leyland said.

Hernandez and Scherzer almost became afterthoughts on this long night, but their performances will be tough to top the rest of the season.

Both pitchers finished with 12 strikeouts. Each threw eight strong innings. And neither could get help from their respective offenses to get the victory.

According to the Mariners, with information from the Elias Sports Bureau, the performance by Scherzer and Hernandez was the first time two starters had at least 12 strikeouts and allowed no more than one earned run since Randy Johnson and Mark Langston hooked up in 1992.

How good were Scherzer and Hernandez? Scherzer threw 105 pitches with 75 strikes; Hernandez threw 106 with 76 strikes.

"It was a great game. Both sides," Hernandez said. "Scherzer was pretty good, too. He was changing speeds, he was throwing breaking balls. I was just trying to match it up. I was trying to be aggressive. Against a team like that you have to be in attack mode."

Hernandez retired 12 of his first 13 batters, including six strikeouts. The only one to reach was Miguel Cabrera, who dumped a single in front of Franklin Gutierrez in right-center with two outs in the first.

The 12 strikeouts for Hernandez were the most since his perfect game against Tampa Bay last August when he also struck out 12. It was Hernandez's ninth career start with 12 or more strikeouts. He was replaced to start the ninth by closer Tom Wilhelmsen. Hernandez gave up four hits and didn't walk a batter.

While Hernandez was rolling, Scherzer was just as good. He retired the first nine and didn't allow a runner until Gutierrez reached on an infield single leading off the fourth. Seattle finally got to Scherzer in the seventh when Michael Morse led off with a double and Raul Ibanez followed with a single to tie it at 1.

Scherzer set a season-high with his 12 strikeouts. He had 11 against Oakland in his previous start.

"Hernandez was unbelievable. He was Hernandez being Hernandez," Pena said. "But Max, he was great. I've never seen him like that before. He was toe-to-toe with Hernandez."

Detroit's only run off Hernandez was unearned, after Victor Martinez reached on shortstop Brendan Ryan's error to open the fifth inning and scored on Jhonny Peralta's groundout.

NOTES: It was the first time since Safeco Field opened in July 1999 that both starting pitchers had 10 or more strikeouts. ... RHP Jose Valverde pitched for the Tigers' extended spring training squad in Florida vs. the Braves. He tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout. ... At Triple-A Tacoma, Carlos Truinfel needed just five innings to hit for the cycle. He was the first Tacoma player to hit for the cycle since Ibanez in 1997.

What really makes us fat? Article questions our understanding of the cause of obesity

Apr. 16, 2013 ? The science of obesity: what do we really know about what makes us fat? If we are to make any progress in tackling the obesity crisis, we have to look again at what really makes us fat, claims a new article.

Gary Taubes, co-founder of the Nutrition Science Initiative, argues that our understanding of the cause of obesity may be incorrect, and that rectifying this misconception is "absolutely critical" to future progress.

"What we want to know," he says, "is what causes us to gain weight, not whether weight loss can be induced under different conditions of semi-starvation."

The history of obesity research is a history of two competing hypotheses of energy balance and endocrinology, writes Taubes. Since the 1950s, conventional wisdom on obesity has been that it is caused by a positive energy balance -- in other words we get fat because we overeat. The alternative hypothesis -- that obesity is a hormonal or regulatory disorder -- was dismissed after the second world war as being unworthy of serious attention.

But Taubes believes that the wrong hypothesis -- energy balance -- won out and that it is this hypothesis, along with substandard science, that has fuelled the obesity crisis and the related chronic diseases.

He argues that attempts to blame the obesity epidemics worldwide on increased availability of calories "typically ignore the fact that these increases are largely carbohydrates" and, as such, these observations "shed no light on whether it's total calories to blame or the carbohydrate calories."

Nor do they shed light on the more fundamental question of whether people or populations get fat "because they're eating more, or eat more because the macronutrient composition of their diets is promoting fat accumulation ? in effect, driving an increase in appetite."

Taubes also points to "substandard" research that is "incapable of answering the question of what causes obesity."

As a result, he has co-founded the Nutrition Science Initiative, a not-for-profit organisation to "fund and facilitate rigorously well controlled experimental trials, carried out by independent, sceptical researchers." Our hope, he says, is that these experiments will answer definitively the question of what causes obesity, and help us finally make meaningful progress against it.

If we are to make progress in the struggle against obesity and its related chronic diseases, he believes we must accept the existence of alternative hypotheses of obesity, refuse to accept substandard science, and find the willingness and the resources to do better.

"With the burden of obesity now estimated at greater than $150bn (?100bn; ?118bn) a year in the US alone, virtually any amount of money spent on getting nutrition research right can be defended on the basis that the long term savings to the healthcare system and to the health of individuals will offset the costs of the research by orders of magnitude," he concludes.

Google's MyGlass Companion App for Google Glass Is Now Available in Google Play

Though this is completely useless for pretty much every single one of us (since we don't have Google Glass), Google just released the companion Android app for Google Glass called MyGlass in Google Play. Even Google so cheekily reminds us that the app does nothing (without Glass, that is) saying: "If you don't have Glass, then downloading this will be a waste of time. Sorry about that. But if you swipe the screenshots to the right you'll see there's a picture of a puppy in pajamas. So not a total waste of time after all." More »

Hydroelectric station in Valais: Swiss production rose by 18.1% in 2012

BERN, SWITZERLAND ? A cold first three months in 2012 lie behind a 0.6 percent increase in energy used last year. Switzerland consumed 59 billion kWh (kilowatt hours) of energy in 2012,the Federal Energy Office said Wednesday 17 April.

The figure climbs to 63.4b when energy transport and distribution losses are added in. Three main factors contribute to energy consumption: weather, gross domestic product changes and population shifts. GDP rose by 1 percent in 2012 and while official figures for population growth are not yet available, Bern estimates this at 0.9 percent for last year.

Production also rose, to 68b, the highest figure since the record year of 2001. Hydraulic power in particular rose by 18.1 percent. The country?s energy production breakdown for 2012:

hydraulic, 58.7 percent
nuclear, 35.8 percent
conventional thermal power stations and other, 5.5 percent.

The country had a slightly smaller energy import/export surplus than in 2011, with 2.2 billion kWh last year, compared to 2.6b the previous year.

Dish Network offering to buy Sprint in $25.5B deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? Dish Network is offering to buy Sprint Nextel Corp. in a cash-and-stock deal it values at $25.5 billion, saying its bid is superior to that of Japanese phone company SoftBank.

Sprint's stock jumped in premarket trading Monday.

SoftBank Corp. is seeking approval from U.S. authorities for its $20 billion purchase of a 70 percent stake in Sprint Nextel Corp. that would be Japan's biggest foreign acquisition ever. Sprint previously said that it expected the deal with SoftBank to close during the summer.

The transaction, which was announced in October, was looked at as a way to position Sprint as a stronger competitor against rivals AT&T and Verizon.

Dish, an Englewood, Colo., satellite television company, said Monday that its proposed transaction includes $17.3 billion in cash and $8.2 billion in stock.

Sprint stockholders would receive $7 per share, which is a 13 percent premium to its Friday closing price of $6.22. This includes $4.76 per share in cash and 0.05953 Dish shares per Sprint share.

Dish said that the cash portion of its bid is an 18 percent premium over the $4.03 per share implied by the SoftBank offer, while the stock portion represents about 32 percent ownership in a combined Dish/Sprint company, as compared with SoftBank's proposal of a 30 percent interest in Sprint alone.

Dish Network Corp. said that its offer is a 13 percent premium to the existing SoftBank offer. The company also said that its proposal would result in estimated cost savings of $11 billion.

In a letter sent to Sprint Chairman James H. Hance Jr., Dish Chairman Charles Ergen said that the company would fund the cash component of its bid with $8.2 billion of cash on its balance sheet and additional debt financing.

The letter also said that Dish would have preferred holding confidential talks with Sprint about its proposal, but that the existing agreement with SoftBank and impending deadlines related to its shareholder vote prompted Dish to confirm its offer publicly.

Shares of Sprint rose 68 cents, or 10.9 percent, to $6.90 before the market open.

HTC One production problems have 'significantly improved,' U.S. brokerage says

HTC One

HTC reportedly has made great gains in tackling supply issues over the last two weeks

It was just over a month ago that reports were coming in of a delayed HTC One launch due to problems sourcing components from manufacturers. According to brokerage firm J.P. Morgan Securities, things are looking up for HTC and its newest flagship. In the last two weeks, parts supply issues have been greatly improving, and revenue projections for the Taiwanese phone company are now expected to increase over fifty percent compared to last quarter.

HTC's production progress is being attributed to "new vendor qualification, technology transfer and volume increase." Thanks to these improvements, phone production is expected to increase from 300,000 in March to 1.2 million in April. May looks even better, with expected shipments reaching as high as 2 million units.

Some damage has already been done to HTC One sales, where launch delays as long as a month were seen in important markets. Although HTC looks to be getting back on track, analysts still see production problems in the future thanks to difficulties producing the HTC One voice coil motor and compact camera module. With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 quickly approaching, further manufacturing bottlenecks could mean serious trouble for HTC.
