Screenwriter Nora Ephron Dead At 71

Oscar-nominated writer of 'Sleepless in Seattle' and 'When Harry Met Sally ... ' died of pneumonia.
By Josh Wigler

Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and director Nora Ephron died Tuesday (June 26) from pneumonia. She was 71. News of Ephron's passing first hit the Internet late Tuesday when journalist Liz Smith, a friend of Ephron's, published a column remembering the late director.

"She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent," wrote Smith. "She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet."

Ephron lived a storied life both on set and behind the scenes. Born in New York City in 1941 and raised in Beverly Hills, California, Ephron worked as a journalist for numerous years before trying her hand writing and directing for film. Her writing appeared in such outlets as Esquire and New York, and she was even married to Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame from 1976 until 1980. She later wed screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi in 1987; they remained married until the time of her death.

In 1983, Ephron's first major Hollywood movie, "Silkwood," arrived in theaters. Starring marquee names including Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher, Ephron's "Silkwood" was based on the true story of Karen Silkwood, who was killed in a suspicious accident during her investigation into the unethical practices of the nuclear power plant that employed her. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including one for Ephron's screenplay.

Over the course of her career, Ephron cemented her place in Hollywood as one of the industry's finest romantic comedy writers. She wrote the iconic "When Harry Met Sally ... " and directed numerous films, including the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan-starring "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." Her final film as writer and director was "Julie & Julia."

"I won't say, 'Rest in peace, Nora,' " Smith wrote in her eulogy of Ephron. "I will just ask, 'What the hell will we do without you?' "

Share your condolences for Ephron's family and friends in the comments.

For cleaner laundry, add diamonds

21 hrs.

Laundry detergent laced with teeny, tiny diamonds removes fats and dirt at lower temperatures than the blingless variety, according to new research.

The nanodiamonds -- pieces of carbon less than ten thousandths the diameter of a human hair ? were added powder detergent to see if they could scrub out grime that typically requires hot water cycles to remove.

?We found that the 5 nanometer diamonds changed the way detergents behaved at 25 degrees centigrade (77 degrees Fahrenheit), doubling the amount of fat removed,? Andrew Marsh, a chemist at the University of Warwick in England, said in a news release.?

?Even at temperatures as low as 15 degrees centigrade (59 degrees F), otherwise hard-to-remove fat could be solubilized from a test surface.?

Without the diamonds, water temperatures between 60 and 90 C (140 and 194 F) are required to get such stains out of laundry.?

The lower temperature water afforded by the bling, the team notes, should help people save on their energy bills. Of course, they may have to spend that savings on the pricier detergent.

The research appears in the journal Applied Materials and Interfaces.?

Google simulates the human brain with 1000 machines, 16000 cores and a love of cats

Google simulates the human brain with 1000 machines, 16000 cores and a love of cats

Don't tell Google, but its latest X lab project is something performed by the great internet public every day. For free. Mountain View's secret lab stitched together 1,000 computers totaling 16,000 cores to form a neural network with over 1 billion connections, and sent it to YouTube looking for cats. Unlike the popular human time-sink, this was all in the name of science: specifically, simulating the human brain. The neural machine was presented with 10 million images taken from random videos, and went about teaching itself what our feline friends look like. Unlike similar experiments, where some manual guidance and supervision is involved, Google's pseudo-brain was given no such assistance.

It wasn't just about cats, of course -- the broader aim was to see whether computers can learn face detection without labeled images. After studying the large set of image-data, the cluster revealed that indeed it could, in addition to being able to develop concepts for human body parts and -- of course -- cats. Overall, there was 15.8 percent accuracy in recognizing 20,000 object categories, which the researchers claim is a 70 percent jump over previous studies. Full details of the hows and whys will be presented at a forthcoming conference in Edinburgh.

The Worden Report: Congressional Ethics: Investing on Insider Info

To what extent should members of Congress be permitted to adjust their investment portfolios in line with general information on the economy gained as part of their legislative work? Whereas insider trading refers to information that is not available to the public on a particular company, the trades at issue as the U.S. headed toward a possible financial crisis pertained to diversified portfolios.

To take one example, John Boehner (R-Ohio), who would become the Speaker of the House after the 2010 Congressional elections, met U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson for breakfast on January 23, 2008. According to the Washington Post, ?Boehner would later report the rearrangement of a portion of his own financial portfolio made on that same day. He sold between $50,000 and $100,000 from a more aggressive mutual fund and moved money into a safer investment. Boehner is one of 34 members of Congress who took steps to recast their financial portfolios? . . . after phone calls or meetings with Paulson; his successor, Timothy F. Geithner; or Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, according to a Washington Post examination of appointment calendars and congressional disclosure forms. The lawmakers, many of whom held leadership positions and committee chairmanships in the House and Senate, changed portions of their portfolios a total of 166 times within two business days of speaking or meeting with the administration officials.?

The paper points out that the financial moves by the members of Congress were permitted at the time under congressional ethics rules.? Some ethics experts suggested that lawmakers should refrain from taking actions in their financial portfolios when they might know more than the public. In my view, we can assume that lawmakers will know more than the general public on matters relevant to investment decisions; the question is whether those decisions ought to be placed in blind trusts.

Lawmakers are going to know more than the public; merely sitting through hours of hearings will accomplish that. Indeed, part of the rationale for having a representative rather than a direct democracy is that representatives can be in a position to be better informed on the economy because lawmaking is at least in principle their full-time endeavor while they are in office. Essentially, the electorate delegates the popular sovereignty to the representative to focus on the lawmaking role.

Furthermore, human nature being what it is, we cannot but expect the lawmakers to have protected their investments by reducing the level of risk after learning that the U.S. economy could go over the cliff on account of being over-leveraged on subprime mortgages and over-securitized on them plus the related securitized insurance swaps. Adjusting their portfolios based on ?insider information? on an upcoming stimulus plan is based on more particular information and thus more problematic even though it is not on a particular company. Regardless of the specificity of the information, however, any private gain from the public service is rightly generally regarded not only as unfair, but also inappropriate and unseemly.

At the very least, for lawmakers to use even the inevitable information they have on the general condition of the economy for private gain detracts from the notion that public service is a duty rather than an opportunity to enrich oneself. In this regard, having citizen lawmakers are preferable to careerists. However, even doing one stint in the U.S. House of Representatives could be financially lucrative, so even with term limits, the question of whether lawmakers should be able to adjust their investment portfolios would be relevant.

Although it is undoubtedly impossible to stop virtually any private benefit from accruing to members of Congress, their management of their own wealth should be separated from their public service where possible. The instrument of a blind trust makes this possible in the case of investments, assuming that direct and indirect communication with the managers of the trusts is preempted effectively. The trusts could even be mandated for several years after the lawmaker vacates public office.

More generally, the opportunistic orientation evinced by several lawmakers in January 2008 suggests that they may have viewed their respective offices less as stemming from a sense of a duty oriented to public service than as being an opportunity for personal gain. Rather than electing citizens who yearn for the office, perhaps we ought to seek out those who have reservations in place of ambition, yet would serve out of a sense of duty if called. In other words, whoever in the two parties gets people to run for the offices ought to be suspicious of people whose sense of duty seems all too comfortable and convenient to come out a sense of obligation. In other words, if it is easy to convince someone to run, then he or she probably is not the best person for public service.

Centennial Potato Plot helping Presque Isle hospital celebrate ...

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine ? A unique project is under way in Aroostook County to illustrate how a 100-year-old hospital took root in the area.

Officials from The Aroostook Medical Center, Cavendish Produce and Northeast Packaging Company gathered in a Presque Isle potato field early Monday to officially dedicate the TAMC Centennial Potato Plot.

The two-acre section of a field on U.S. Route 1 between Presque Isle and Caribou celebrates the hospital and its ties to agriculture.

According to hospital officials, the idea for what is now TAMC was envisioned by Frank White, an attorney, in 1908. During that time, he made frequent trips to outlying farms and neighboring smaller communities by horse and wagon, soliciting donations.

Through the efforts of White and other community leaders, Presque Isle General Hospital was incorporated on April 8, 1912. The hospital was sustained through the years by public donations, not only of money, but of food, furnishings and linens.

Cavendish Produce donated the two acres of russet potatoes that have already been planted.

Plans are for TAMC employees and their family members to harvest the field by hand in early October. The future of the harvested potatoes involves Northeast Packaging Company.

Bob Umphrey, president of the company, said Monday that a special commemorative five-pound potato bag will be designed to recognize TAMC?s centennial. That process will include an art contest to engage members of the public.

?We are launching an open contest to help us design one side of this special bag,? he explained. Northeast Packaging Company will produce the packaging later this summer in time for the harvesting of the potatoes.

A panel of judges from Northeast Packaging Company, Cavendish and TAMC will review the entries and pick a winner. The selected design will be unveiled at the Maine Potato Blossom Festival on the judges reviewing stand on Saturday, July 21, just before the parade during a new event called the Spuddy Recovery Triathlon organized and co-sponsored by TAMC.

Once the potatoes are harvested and placed in the special commemorative bags, TAMC will send the spuds to statewide elected officials and other dignitaries. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins has agreed to see to it that a bag is delivered to the White House. In addition, TAMC intends to provide commemorative bags of potatoes to attendees at their annual Fall Health Fair, which this year will be themed Harvest, History and Health.

?We are so grateful to these two generous companies for working collaboratively with TAMC and making this unique project possible,? said Lynn Lombard, chairperson of the TAMC Board of Trustees. ?As we continue to mark 100 years of The Aroostook Medical Center, our hope is to engage as many residents as possible in the celebration. Certainly, the TAMC Centennial Potato Plot will be a visible reminder all summer long and into the fall of the significant contributions of both the agricultural community and TAMC to our wonderful quality of life here in The County.?

The design contest is open to all ages and will run through July 12. A special entry form, complete with contest rules and a designated area to match the printable space on the potato bag are available and will be mailed to prospective entrants.

For information on the contest or to have an official entry form mailed, call 768-4044 or email bcaron@tamc.org.

Worked hard for years and wife was sick. Trying to get in a car without paying over a month. Our life is coming together but the credit score is still suffering. The good money is helping but it takes time. Please advise. Need better car.

What kind of car require you to pay 700 a month is it a short term loan is it an expensive car the thing is if you make good money but have bad credit the only way to really improve it is to pay it off early geting a car or a loan is one of the fastest way to improve credit if your car is upside down in value you need to consider refinancing it have your credit score improve within a couple year its all depend on what you really want to do i understand you make good money but it doesnt always mean that you have to go luxury route try getting a cheaper car the one that you could afford without hesitating rather than i know i can afford this but it wont be worth it kind of car ive been in this situation before.

A while ago my business went bad had car repo and had to shortsale my home then things got really great financialy but credit still terrible i wanted to buy a used car that was 26000 and had to put down 12000 just so i could do a 25 apr for 5 years the apr cost more than a car i knew i could afford it but it would be a full blown stupidity if i were to take the deal i ended up getting a really cheap car 16500 with 3500 down payment my monthly was 277 a moth for 5 year to be honest i was making over 30000 a month at that time but i didnt think it was a smart choice to spend almost a grand a month on a car that worth about 26000 anyways i paid off the car in 5 months and drove it til the end of the year paid off all my debt only had 12000 plus 6000 for repo then a year later i went after that 26000 car newer year and got quote at 17 its been 3 years now and now my credit isnt great but its decent 702 u can build credit fast if you have money to back it up buy somethign nice and decent then pay it off really quickly when the lender knows you dont really need them they will be the one who beg you for ur business if refinancing your car istn a choice try get a cheaper car and negotiate with the sale person to give you good amount of trade in you may not be in command right now but once things starting to come together in a year or 2 u will be the one telling them what to do.

When one should refinance home mortgage Does it help to bring the number of period of payments down If so how.

Great question Unfortunately there is no right answer here as it is dependent on your individual situation and what your financial goals are. Some questions that you need to answer to yourself or a mortgage broker or lender areHow long do you expect to be in your home If youre only going to be in your home for a few more years it may make sense not to refinance out of your ARM. If youre going to be in your home longer than seven years it might be a smart move to refinance to a fixedrate mortgage. How much equity do you have in your home Using the equity in your home to pay off other bills can be a smart thing.

Are you willing to pay points to get a lower rate Paying points may or may not be your best option depending on what youre doing. Points paid on a loan youve refinanced can be deducted from your taxes only in small increments130th a year for a 30year mortgage for example. This means it could be several years before your lower rate makes up for the points you pay. However if youre buying a home points paid are a taxdeductible expense for that year. Will having lower payments more than make up for the closing costs fees and points if any Sometimes the money saved with lower payments is less than closing costs and other fees associated with refinancing.

Many people move within nine years so it may not make sense to pay a higher interest rate for a 30year fixedrate mortgage when youre not going to be in the home that long. Doing so may be costing you money. Consider refinancing to an ARM instead youll get a lower rate and lower your monthly mortgage payment. Do you have highinterest credit card debt Unlike your mortgage the interest you pay on a credit card is not taxdeductible and you normally pay a higher rate than you would on your mortgage. As always I recommend you speak with your tax advisor as well as your mortgage lender or banker.

Good luck.

I just closed on my first home at the end of this past December. But since I made this move my credit card situation has gotten out of control. I have several cards that became maxed out during the moving process and now cant seem to keep up. I havent been late on a house or car payment But my credit cards are now a couple months And I just emptied the bank account paying utilities so I still cant pay them. By the time my next paycheck comes around I will be paying the house and car again. My mortgage was an 8020 split 51 ARM.

Do I need to refinance the whole mortgage Can I just add 10k to the loan somehow or borrow 10k against the houseMy credit was ok when I bought the house but now its taken a beating due to these credit cards being maxed and late. Help.

The big question is whether you have enough equity in the house to even consider refinancing. If not the idea of borrowning against the house wont work even if youre willing to pay the cost. Plus you need to consider how you got in this shape. It sounds like youre routinely spending more than you earn thus your cards are maxd out. How can you get this back in control if you refinance and increase your mortgage payment You first need to figure out how to stop spending. Maintaining a Swimming Pool Throughout the Year ...

4013166677 2c7edf2c74 m Maintaining a Swimming Pool Throughout the Year

Regular maintenance of a swimming pool is imperative to ensure that it can be used throughout the year. Whilst cleaning is the starting point of all pool maintenance, the procedures differ throughout the year.

?

Spring ? one of the most important times of the year for pool maintenance is spring. The weather is getting warmer and the pool is beginning to be used occasionally. Throughout spring, a full and intense cleaning should be carried out, including vacuuming the floor and thoroughly washing the tiles with the appropriate pieces of equipment.

?

In addition, spring should also be the time when the chemical level of the water is started to be checked regularly, with any chemicals required being added to make the water as clean and as safe as possible.

?

Summer ? the busiest time for swimming pools is without doubt the summer period.

The weather is warm, the days are long and it makes a welcome break from the hustle or bustle of everyday life to relax in the pool water.

?

As the majority of initial maintenance should have been carried out in spring, maintaining a pool throughout the summer is a relatively easy process. Each morning and night any unwanted objects, such as insects or foliage, should be removed from the water and the chemical levels should be checked regularly, adding the appropriate chemicals to ensure that the water remains at an acceptable pH level.

?

It has to be noted that as a pool may be subject to heavy usage, additional cleaning may be required depending on the amount of usage it receives.

?

Autumn ? Pool usage generally begins to tailor off throughout autumn, although regular use is still apparent, particularly in early autumn.

Similar to summer, autumn maintenance should involve the regular checking and maintaining of chemical levels within the water, as well as daily removal of foliage and insects.

?

As autumn is the time of year when the trees begin to lose their leaves, it is often worthwhile to invest in a skimmer or net, which can be used to remove large amounts of unwanted items from the top of the pool in an easy fashion. However, if it is situated in an area surrounded by trees and other greenery, owners may look at purchasing a cover to place over the area when not in use.

?

Winter ? due to the cold weather, unless a pool is heated and indoors, it will very rarely be used on a regular basis, if at all, during winter. Whilst it may be the easiest time of year overall for maintenance as the pool will not be in use, preparing it for winter can be very labor intensive.

?

Firstly, the water should be drained to under the stated skimmer or relevant line, which ensures no water is constantly entering the filter and other pieces of equipment unnecessarily. Once this has been carried out, the pool should be cleaned thoroughly ? including the equipment, such as the filter ? followed by ?shocking? the water (a process by which the water is cleaned intensely) and finally covering the area with a sturdy, high quality cover.

?

Each pool varies depending on how and when it was built, so whilst the above provides a standard maintenance procedure, each and every pool may require greater or reduced maintenance.

I, Ron, eek!: Little Boxes Made of Ticky Tack: Musings on Academic ...

One of the problems, in my opinion, with academia and, as a result, academic culture as it has evolved, developed, devolved, choose your poison, is the division of the social sciences and the humanities into disciplinary territories with names like History, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Folklore, English, and so on and on and on.

It is interesting to compare academic times present with intellectual times past. In the nineteenth century, before the development of academic disciplines and before social science and humanities fossilised or hardened into what they are today, the interdisiplinary and totalistic and wholisic intellectual life was actually treasured and rewarded. Some of those who engaged in the grand interdisiplinary and wholistic enterprise, in fact, became the totemistic godfathers of the biological sciences, Sociology, and Anthropology and remain very much so today. Charles Darwin, for instance, in his Origins of Species (1859) and Descent of Man (1871) pointed out that all species, including man, humans, were the products of the interaction between biology and environment. He called it adaptation. Karl Marx in his various writings, polemical and "scientific", explored the prehistory and history of human economic activity from hunter-gatherer societies through agricultural feudal societies to industrial capitalist societies. Max Weber explored in great detail and depth the question of why capitalism arose in the West by focusing on variety of factors that contributed to the development of modern capitalism in the West including Western Calvinism. Emile Durkheim analysed how societies made themselves into objects of their own transcendental desire and how modern societies differed from pre-modern societies

The development of academia into disciplines claiming special knowledge over a particular territory of human knowledge in the late 19th and early 20th century has been all for the bad, in my opinion, when it comes to understanding human life in all its shapes, forms, and sizes particularly when compared with the comparative interdisciplinarity of the 19th century. On the historical and sociological level the disciplining of academia is a reflection of the same specialisation of labour processes that have occurred in other sectors of the modern world thanks to such things as capitalism, industrialisation, centralisation, professionalisation, and bureaucratisation. On the sociology of knowledge level this specialisation has had a particularly deleterious effect because, if we really want to understand humankind in all of its historical and cultural forms, we have to look at humans through the broad lenses of biology, economics, culture, politics, and geography not through the narrowly focused nearsighted lenses of academic disciplines. We have to do this because, as Darwin recognised over a hundred years ago, human life is the product of both nature (biology, genetics, demography) and nurture (economics, culture, politics, and geography). For this reason dividing knowledge into little or not so little territorial boxes, as academia has done, does not help us understand human life and human culture in general. In fact it actually hinders us.

American Anthropology recognised this when it subdivided itself into Biological or Evolutionary Anthropology, Cultural or Social Anthropology, Linguistics, and Archaeology. What sounds great in theory has not proved as wonderful in practise, however. The various strands of academic Anthropology, like academia in general, have developed their own specialised knowledges, their own bureaucratic practises, and their own distinct languages making discourse between all four branches difficult if not impossible and not always desirable to increasingly distinct Bioanthropologists, Ethnographers and Ethnologists, Linguists, and Anthropological Archaeologists. Moreover, American Anthropology as practised has long had another problem. Cultural and Social Anthropology has tended to focus on non-modern societies and cultures leaving the moderns to Sociology, Anthropological Archaeology has nothing to do with Ancient and Classical Archaeology. So even the one discipline that attempted in theory to be wholistic and which made sacred the collection of materials from around the world on every hunter-gatherer, pastoral, agricultural, water based societies and cultures for their Human Relations Area Files, hasn't really been engaged in this necessary and essential interdisciplinary and comparative work in practise. And while this may be partly due to increasing human complexity and the increasing size of the Western world in particular it also has something, a large something in my opinion, to do with Western specialisation, centralisation, professionalisation, and bureaucratisation.

I regard this little fable about the failures of wholistic Anthropology, by the way, as the proverbial canary in the coal mine waring us that the notion that all disciplines working together will produce a general understanding of and knowledge of the world we live in in all its glory is an illusion if not a hallucination. Specialisation generally leads to the development of separate (but not equal) academic disciplines and "distinct" academic knowledges, academic knowledge specialisation (the higher education bureaucracy's version of the division of labour), and languages, academic little boxes, not interdisciplinary interaction or a broad understanding of the world and the humans who live in that world.

Thankfully interdisciplinary and comparative explorations of human life and human culture in all their complexity is not yet dead as the writings of Jurgen Habermas, Anthony Giddens, Pierre Bourdieu, and others show. Such interdisciplinary attempts to get at humans, human society, and human culture are, however, anomalies in an academic disciplinary context that rewards specialisation rather than interdisciplinarity and which penalises unorthodoxy and heresy. And that, dear unreaders, is a tragedy of immense dimensions and is why I am no longer sure academia really works or functions as much more than an bureaucracy for the accumulation of social capital, cultural capital, and economic capital by some.

AP IMPACT: Syria rebels divided, at times violent

SARJEH, Syria (AP) ? Rebel commander Ahmed Eissa al-Sheikh keeps a paper on his desk bearing the names of the dead from his brigade. The first 16 are neatly typed below a Quranic verse extolling martyrdom. The next 14 are handwritten and crammed into the margin, because the paper is full.

Al-Sheikh, an Islamist with a long black beard and gray fatigues, runs the Falcons of Damascus group from the mayor's office in his village, which his fighters have taken over. The list is a constant reminder of al-Sheikh's personal score with the Syrian regime: 20 of the dead are his relatives, including three brothers and his 16-year-old son, all killed fighting Syrian forces in the last year.

One of northern Syria's most powerful and best-armed commanders, Al-Sheikh boasts more than 1,000 fighters, and they don't shy away from rougher tactics themselves. They have released prisoners in bomb-laden cars and then detonated them at army checkpoints ? turning the drivers into unwitting suicide bombers.

Most of their weapons are booty, including at least two anti-aircraft guns, some anti-tank missiles and one tank, but they buy arms with donations from "honorable businessmen." Although al-Sheikh, who ran a grocery store before the uprising, wouldn't disclose the source or amount, he gets enough to pay some of his men monthly salaries of about $25, slightly more for those with wives and children. His fighters say the cash comes from Syrian expatriates and other Arabs. He was heard on the phone thanking a group in Bahrain.

"God willing, Syria will not bow to anyone but Allah after the regime falls," he said.

___

EDITOR'S NOTE: Journalist Ben Hubbard was part of a three-member Associated Press team that spent two weeks with rebels in northern Syria, gathering firsthand information on the increasingly bloody rebellion against President Bashar Assad ? the longest and deadliest uprising of the Arab Spring.

___

Al-Sheikh is one face of the rebel movement in Syria. There are many more.

During two weeks in northern Syria, three Associated Press journalists counted more than 20 rebel groups, with anywhere from fewer than 100 to more than 1,000 fighters each. They go by names like the Idlib Martyrs Brigade and the Shield of the Revolution, and while all share a deep hatred of President Bashar Assad's regime, their unity stops there.

Simply put, no one is in charge.

This comes at a time when efforts to end 15 months of strife in Syria are collapsing, and the rebel movement has taken the lead in the struggle against Assad. Some countries have talked of boosting the rebels' capabilities against the regime, and U.S. officials have told the AP that U.S. operatives are sifting among the rebel groups to determine which should receive arms from other Arab nations.

Rebel coordination rarely extends beyond neighboring towns and villages and never to the provincial or national level. Many rebels don't even know the commanders in towns two hours away.

While the regime has been brutal, so have some of the rebels ? another cause of concern for the West.

Opposition activists filter most information about the rebels sent outside the country, making it hard to get an accurate picture. But several groups said they had sent captured soldiers "to Cyprus," which the rebels use as a euphemism for execution usually by gunfire.

One group said it had killed two brothers caught collaborating with the regime ? one during interrogation, the other by firing squad.

Rebels have scored small victories against regime forces throughout Syria's northern Idlib province. Armed with bought, looted or homemade weapons, they have destroyed government army posts and littered main highways with charred army vehicles.

In the countryside, they roam freely in much more territory than was previously known, their bearded, camouflaged gunmen on motorcycles zipping through strings of towns and villages with no remaining police or security presence. Children often hail the fighters with V-for-victory signs and calls of "May God protect you!"

But Syria's army retains a chokehold on many large towns and cities with tanks, attack helicopters and heavy artillery, weapons that the rebels' current arms can't challenge.

Indeed, more than two dozen rebel commanders, fighters and activists said that without better arms they can do no more than chip away at the regime ? a recipe for a long, deadly insurgency.

"If we get military aid, the end will come quickly," said Ahmed Abdel-Qader, a rebel coordinator in the village of Koreen. "If not, we have no idea how this will end. We are here. We're not going back. God will decide the rest."

Even groups associated with the Free Syrian Army, which claims to represent the armed opposition, bemoan the failure of its Turkey-based leadership to deliver aid. While they wait, most rely on guerrilla tactics.

One afternoon, 50 fighters in a vast olive grove crawled under barbed wire, leaped over oil drums and dove through flaming hoops in training for future attacks. Most were in their 20s and 30s and had fled the provincial capital of Idlib when the army seized it in March. Their rifles can't match the tanks guarding the city, and they can't afford better weapons.

Commander Maan Dahnin said a Kalashnikov rifle now costs $1,500 and bullets are $4 each. That's why when they lined up for target practice, most fighters fired only a few times.

Some weapons come from neighboring Iraq, though many are duds, and some from Turkey, he said. The best come from corrupt officers in the Syrian army itself.

"There are those who worry that the regime is going to fall, so they want to fill their pockets first," Dahnin said.

For now, his group's 1,000 men never gather in one place, so that if they are shelled or come under fire, not everyone will die. Meanwhile, they focus on roadside bombs built with dynamite, sugar and fertilizer and detonated by remote control.

Like most rebel commanders, Dahnin said his group gets no outside support.

"Here's the biggest proof," he said, pointing to a fighter wearing plastic flip-flops. "He's only good for one thing: toothpaste advertisements," he said, prying open the man's mouth to reveal a row of rotten teeth.

The conflict in Syria has already killed more than 14,000 people and appears headed for civil war. The Syrian government has ignored popular demands for reform, instead blaming the violence on armed gangs and foreign-backed terrorists. Others have warned against an influx of Islamists. The AP journalists saw no evidence of foreign fighters.

The uprising reached Idlib in April 2011, about a month after Syrian protesters inspired by other Arab Spring revolts first took to the streets and faced violent security crackdowns.

The protests started small in Ariha, a busy commercial center on the face of a round-topped mountain, but residents were shocked when regime forces shot and killed five protesters in one day, said Khalid Naif, a doctor. Many more people then joined in, armed first with hunting guns and later with attack rifles.

A year ago, the army surrounded the city and took over a downtown building, paralyzing the city center, Naif said. He easily named many of the dozens of people he has treated for gunshot and shrapnel wounds since. Others died before reaching the clinic.

Early this month, when a military convoy arrived to quash the city's opposition, rebel fighters blew up tanks and armored cars in a hail of gunfire and grenades and stormed the army position downtown.

Weeks later, battle scars remain. Three destroyed tanks sit in the main boulevard, their tops blown off like bottle caps. The former army post is charred black, and walls of nearby buildings are pockmarked with bullet holes.

Graffiti on one wall reads, in English, "The people wants SOS." Elsewhere: "We bow only for God."

But the rebel victory was limited. Some stores have reopened and shoppers have returned to downtown, but a ring of army checkpoints restricts movement in and out, forcing many residents to sneak out on foot. Military helicopters and snipers still target the city, wounding more people every week.

The city's rebel commander, Jamal Akta, who ran a unisex barber shop before the uprising, said the battle had killed 10 civilians and no rebels. While proud of the fight, he said his men could do no more.

"If we get more weapons, we can get rid of all the checkpoints," he said. "But the ammunition we have now is enough to defend the city, no more than that."

A ring of checkpoints with a central army post full of snipers and armored vehicles also strangles Khan Sheikhoun, a dusty, sun-baked city further south, on the country's main north-south highway. Local rebels can't clear out the army, so they blast military vehicles on the highway with rocket-propelled grenades. Two destroyed armored vehicles, one still on its trailer, now lie in the road, and local fighters say the army has changed its route.

"We can't face the regime as an army face to face, so we have to fight like street gangs," said Waddah Sirmani, head of one of the town's half-dozen rebel brigades.

Fighters have also surrounded the central base and fire on supply vehicles to keep the soldiers inside hungry and short of ammunition, he said.

"You could say that those soldiers are imprisoned among us," said activist Hisham Nijim.

Almost all the rebels the AP journalists met were from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority, and many consider the fight a religious cause. When asked what they are fighting for, most said they are fed up with corruption, harassment by security services and a system that gives preference to members of the ruling Baath party and the Alawite sect, to which Assad belongs. The word they used most often was dignity.

"If I go to the beach, I don't want an Alawite to call me a dog and I can't respond," said Ahmed Salim, 27, who left the police for the rebels in October. "I don't want to be treated like an animal. I want to be treated like a human."

Most fighters said they did not target other sects, only those who had fought for the regime.

There was little evidence of rebel attacks on civilians, but they were often merciless with regime troops. For most, the fight to topple Assad has become personal after they have been chased from their cities, their friends and relatives killed. Many frequently flip through "martyr" photos on their cellphones for inspiration.

One night at al-Sheikh's headquarters in Sarjeh, a group of fighters flipped through brigade photos on a laptop.

"Martyr, martyr, martyr, martyr, martyr," they said, pointing out those who had died fighting.

Videos of the group's attacks showed roadside bombs destroying tanks and flipping over army buses, as Islamic chanting played in the background. In one video, a booby-trapped van sped toward a checkpoint and blew up, splattering two soldiers into nearby trees.

The group was still high on a recent attack that had destroyed a military camp nearby. In the end, they photographed the dead bodies of 35 soldiers, drove off a tank they now park under a tree in the village graveyard and held trials for five captured soldiers. All were found guilty of killing other Syrians.

"They traveled to Cyprus," al-Sheikh said with a grin. "On a fast plane."

Courtney Robertson to Pen Tell-All Bachelor Book?!

The Bachelor and The Bachelorette spoilers seem to always leak, but the cast members are always on legal lockdown before, during and after the show.

This fact makes it hard to believe recent reports that this year's Bachelor winner, Courtney Robertson, is planning a tell-all book about the experience.

According to In Touch, Ben Flajnik's fiancee wants to "address misconceptions" about her name-calling, top-dropping, man-eating, "winning" ways.

Courtney Robertson, Ben Flajnik Photo

No other Bachelor or Bachelorette cast member has ever gone off the script by airing juicy behind-the-scenes details ... most likely because of iron-clad NDAs.

Just the same, “Courtney has a lot already written,” according to an unnamed source quoted by Wetpaint. “She started when she got home from filming the show."

"It was her way of coping with frustrations over how she was portrayed. Writing was her release ... We all think she should definitely turn it into a book. It will be SO juicy.”

One way to get around the legal obstacles? "Fictionalizing" it.

“She could do it as a memoir - or as a fictional story loosely based on her life. It’s still in the early stages,” says the source of a possible Courtney novel.

Unclear if Syria downed Turkish jet: Turkish prime minister

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Turkey lost a warplane over the Mediterranean on Friday, but its prime minister said he could not confirm reports that Syria had shot it down and had apologized.

If the Syrians did indeed bring down the Turkish F-4 jet, a new crisis could erupt between two prickly Middle Eastern neighbors already at bitter odds over a 16-month-old revolt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

However, in his first public comments on the warplane's loss, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan took a measured tone, telling reporters he could not say whether the plane had crashed or been shot down.

He said he had no word on the fate of the two airmen.

"The chief of general staff has made the necessary statement about the missing plane. I am not saying it was brought down at the point it fell. It is not possible to say this without knowing the exact facts," Erdogan told a news conference.

The Turkish military earlier said one of its planes was missing. Erdogan said Turkish ships and helicopters were searching for the airmen in cooperation with Syrian vessels.

The prime minister spoke for 15 minutes about trips he had just completed to Mexico and Brazil before mentioning the loss of the plane in response to a question.

Erdogan said he had no firm information on a reported Syrian apology and promised a further statement after a security meeting with his interior and foreign ministers and the chief of general staff later in the evening.

NATO-member Turkey, which had drawn close to Syria before the uprising against Assad, turned against the Syrian leader when he responded violently to pro-democracy protests inspired by popular upheavals elsewhere in the Arab world.

Ankara has previously floated the possibility of setting up some kind of safe haven or humanitarian corridor inside Syria, which would entail military intervention, but has said it would undertake no such action without U.N. Security Council approval.

Turkey hosts about 32,000 Syrian refugees and allows the rebel Syrian Free Army to operate from its territory.

The news that Syrian air defenses downed the plane was first reported by Al-Mayadeen, a Lebanon-based television channel launched this month that hopes to counter the influence of Arabic-language satellite stations such as Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya, both funded by Sunni Gulf Arab countries that have backed the revolt against Assad.

Russia and China, Assad's strongest backers abroad, have fiercely opposed any outside interference in the Syrian crisis, saying envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan is the only way forward.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after talks with his Syrian counterpart that he had urged Syria to "do a lot more" to implement Annan's U.N.-backed proposals, but that foreign countries must also press rebels to stop the violence.

Lavrov said the Syrian authorities were ready to withdraw troops from cities "simultaneously" with rebels. A Syrian military pullback and a ceasefire were key elements in Annan's six-point peace plan, most of which remains a dead letter.

"DESTRUCTIVE COMPETITION"

Annan hit out at some countries he said had taken national initiatives that risked unleashing "destructive competition".

He told a news conference in Geneva that he wanted states with influence on both sides of the conflict to be involved in the peace process, including Iran, Assad's closest ally.

The U.N.-Arab League envoy was speaking a week before a planned Syria crisis meeting that is in doubt because of Western objections to the Islamic Republic's participation.

Violence raged on unabated in Syria, which appears to be sliding towards a sectarian-tinged civil war pitting majority Sunni Muslims against Assad's minority Alawite sect.

Rebels killed at least 25 members of a mainly Alawite pro-Assad militia, and in a separate incident troops turned heavy machineguns on opposition demonstrators in the northern city of Aleppo, killing 10, opposition activists said.

"Armed terrorist groups committed a brutal massacre against 25 citizens in Darat Azzah," state TV reported, saying more were missing from the village in Aleppo province.

Several men covered in blood and piled on top of each other on a roadside, some in army fatigues and some in t-shirts, could be seen in a video link sent by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, apparently showing the aftermath of the same incident.

The British-based opposition watchdog said 26 men believed to be pro-Assad "Shabbiha" militiamen had been killed.

Assad's foes have accused troops and Shabbiha militiamen of perpetrating many abuses against civilians, including mass killings, in the uprising that began in March last year with peaceful protests against four decades of Assad family rule.

In Aleppo, Syria's business hub, thousands of demonstrators were marching toward the central Saadallah al-Jabiri Square when four armored vehicles fired on them, activists told Reuters by telephone. Two of them said they were speaking from Aleppo.

"The wounded were taken to houses and are trapped there. They cannot be transported to hospitals because troops and Shabbiha are surrounding the neighborhood," one of them said.

Aleppo, along with central Damascus, had stayed relatively quiet in the early months of the revolt that engulfed many other provincial cities, but unrest has gradually spread there too.

Activist video footage showed a large crowd of protesters, some draped in revolutionary flags, running along a street as heavy gunfire cracked out. Another video showed a man whose chest was covered in blood being dragged along the road.

FOUR OFFICERS DEFECT

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported heavy government shelling on opposition strongholds in Idlib, Deraa and Homs provinces, as well as fighting between troops and rebels in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor on Friday, a day when anti-Assad protests often erupt after Muslim prayers.

The 46-year-old leader's power rests mainly on the military and a cluster of security agencies dominated by his minority Alawite sect, a distant offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Four brothers, two brigadier-generals and two colonels, announced their defection from the army in a video posted on the Internet on Friday, a day after a Syrian air force pilot flew his MiG-21 fighter plane to neighboring Jordan.

The brothers come from the northern province of Idlib, but do not appear to have had frontline roles in months of fighting there. Two worked as doctors in the Aleppo military hospital, one was an inspector and one was an air force instructor.

The armed forces have suffered a trickle of defections to the opposition, but have remained mostly loyal despite the strain of battling an increasingly potent insurgency.

The violence has driven many Syrians from their homes and 1.5 million now need humanitarian help, up from a million in March, but aid agencies are struggling to reach them.

They include 350,000 in Idlib province and some 250,000 in the flashpoint city of Homs, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

The outside world, paralysed by differences between major powers, has proved impotent to halt the carnage in Syria, where Assad has brushed off diplomatic pressure and sanctions.

In the latest Western gesture of distaste, Britain has barred the head of Syria's National Olympic Committee, General Mowaffak Joumaa, from attending next month's Games in London, the BBC said. Mowaffak is regarded as a close friend of Assad.
