Toddlers' language skills predict less anger by preschool

Dec. 20, 2012 ? Toddlers with more developed language skills are better able to manage frustration and less likely to express anger by the time they're in preschool. That's the conclusion of a new longitudinal study from researchers at the Pennsylvania State University that appears in the journal Child Development.

"This is the first longitudinal evidence of early language abilities predicting later aspects of anger regulation," according to Pamela M. Cole, liberal arts research professor of psychology and human development and family studies at Pennsylvania State University, who was the principal investigator of the study.

Angry outbursts like temper tantrums are common among toddlers, but by the time children enter school, they're expected to have more self-control. To help them acquire this skill, they're taught to use language skills like "using your words." This study sought to determine whether developing language skills relates to developing anger control. Does developing language ability reduce anger between ages 2 and 4?

Researchers looked at 120 predominantly White children from families above poverty but below middle income from the time they were 18 months to 48 months. Through home and lab visits, they measured children's language and their ability to cope with tasks that might elicit frustration.

In one lab-based task, children were asked to wait 8 minutes before opening a gift while their moms finished "work" (a series of questions about how the child usually coped with waiting). Children's anger and regulatory strategies were observed during the 8-minute wait. Among the strategies the children used were seeking support ("Mom, are you done yet?" or "I wonder what it is?") and distracting themselves from the gift (making up a story or counting aloud).

Children who had better language skills as toddlers and whose language developed more quickly expressed less anger at age 4 than their peers whose toddler language skills weren't as good. Children whose language developed more quickly were more likely to calmly seek their mother's support while waiting when they were 3, which in turn predicted less anger at 4. Children whose language developed more quickly also were better able to occupy themselves when they were 4, which in turn helped them tolerate the wait.

"Better language skills may help children verbalize rather than use emotions to convey needs and use their imaginations to occupy themselves while enduring a frustrating wait," according to Cole.

Lufthansa expands its broadband Internet service | News | Breaking ...

Lufthansa passengers travelling on long-haul flights can now once again enjoy the full freedom of online communication. Together with its long-standing partners Panasonic Avionics Corporation and Deutsche Telekom. Lufthansa will be the first airline to offer its customers broadband Internet access on intercontinental routes. The service, which will initially be provided on selected North Atlantic routes, will be available on nearly the entire Lufthansa intercontinental network by the end of 2011. ?Inflight Internet on board our longhaul flights is an innovation in the interests of our customers,?? says Thierry Antinori, member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board. ?FlyNet complements the consistent communications service offering for Lufthansa customers at all points of the travel chain. It provides them with completely new and unique opportunities to spend their time on board or while waiting for connecting flights.??

The extremely fast, high-performance inflight Internet service gives passengers with a WLAN-enabled laptop or smartphone unlimited online access. Thanks to the high bandwidth, emails ? including those with large file attachments ? can be sent and received without any time delay. Business travellers can also access their company?s Virtual Private Network (VPN). In spring 2011, inflight data communication should also be possible using the mobile phone standards GSM and GPRS. In addition to the wireless Internet (WLAN) service, Lufthansa customers will then be able to use their mobile phones to send and receive SMS text messages and transfer data with smart phones such as the iPhone or PDAs such as BlackBerry.

FlyNet is incredibly easy to use. Passengers?no matter where they are sitting on the aircraft ? can logon to the Internet with any WLAN-enabled device, just as at any public hotspot, or in the near future set up a connection with a GSM/GPRS-enabled device. After opening the browser, they can automatically access the exclusive, free Lufthansa FlyNet portal, where they will find constantly updated news about economics, politics, sports and entertainment. Via this portal they can access the Internet service provided by Deutsche Telekom, which is to be paid from February 2011 on. Service provider information detailing the various billing options is available on this portal as well, including payment via credit card, via integrated roaming partners or by redeeming Miles & More award miles. The price for one hour?s online access is 10.95 euros or 3,500 miles, while the 24-hour flat rate is 19.95 euros or 7,000 miles. Under the 24-hour flat rate agreement, passengers can access the Internet on all Lufthansa connecting flights equipped with a hotspot during the period of validity as well as after the flight in Lufthansa lounges. Thanks to the introductory FlyNet offer, inflight Internet access will be available for free on FlyNet-equipped aircraft until January 31, 2011.

Lufthansa operated the world?s first scheduled flight with broadband Internet access on 15 January 2003. From May 2004 until the end of 2006, when Lufthansa?s then-partner Connexion by Boeing discontinued the service, wireless broadband Internet enjoyed increasing popularity. The technology also proved very reliable. By the end of 2006, some 69 of Lufthansa?s long-range aircraft were equipped with FlyNet, making the Lufthansa fleet the largest Internet-enabled long-haul fleet in the world, with about 30,000 users per month.

Tyrone Spong, Steve Mocco to make MMA debuts after careers in other sports

Two athletes who have made their mark in other combat sports are making their MMA debut this weekend.

On Friday, Steve Mocco will make his MMA debut at Resurrection Fighting Alliance. Mocco is one of the best-credentialed wrestlers to make the jump to MMA. He represented the U.S. in the Olympics in 2008, won a Division I NCAA title and the Dan Hodge Trophy, which is awarded to the best collegiate wrestler across divisions. His foot sweep confounded opponents as they had a hard time defending against Mocco's speed.

He will fight Tyler Perry -- no, not Madea -- on Friday. Though he knows he'll have high expectations, he told MMA Fighting he is most excited about competing again.

You know, I just want to compete. If it's on the feet, I want to get the better of the feet and if it's on the ground, I want to get the better of him on the ground. Wherever we'll find ourselves on the floor, I want to do better at.

For Spong, he is jumping to MMA after a long career as a kickboxer. Before tomorrow's debut with the World Series of Fighting, he's won several titles in different promotions, and even once defeated Ray Sefo, the president of WSOF.

Spong is making his debut against Travis Bartlett, and admitted to MMA Junkie he has some nerves going into the fight.

"The most important thing is that I'm not overlooking him," he said of Bartlett. "I'm focusing on the fight; I'm not listening to what other people say. I'm an experienced fighter, so I know what's important."

His fight will air on NBC Sports Network on Saturday night.

An elephant that speaks Korean

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) ? An Asian elephant named Koshik can imitate human speech, speaking words in Korean that can be readily understood by those who know the language. The elephant accomplishes this in a most unusual way: he vocalizes with his trunk in his mouth.

The elephant's vocabulary consists of exactly five words, researchers report on November 1 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication. Those include "annyong" ("hello"), "anja" ("sit down"), "aniya" ("no"), "nuo" ("lie down"), and "choah" ("good"). Ultimately, Koshik's language skills may provide important insights into the biology and evolution of complex vocal learning, an ability that is critical for human speech and music, the researchers say.

"Human speech basically has two important aspects, pitch and timbre," says Angela Stoeger of the University of Vienna. "Intriguingly, the elephant Koshik is capable of matching both pitch and timbre patterns: he accurately imitates human formants as well as the voice pitch of his trainers. This is remarkable considering the huge size, the long vocal tract, and other anatomical differences between an elephant and a human."

For one thing, Stoeger says, elephants have a trunk instead of lips. While their large larynx can produce very low-pitched sounds, Koshik's speech mimicry exactly copies the pitch and other characteristics of his human trainers' voices. A structural analysis of Koshik's speech showed not just clear similarities to human voices, but also clear differences from the usual calls of elephants.

There have been some earlier reports of vocal mimicry in both African and Asian elephants. African elephants have been known to imitate the sound of truck engines, and a male Asian elephant living in a zoo in Kazakhstan was said to produce utterances in both Russian and Kazakh, but that case was never scientifically investigated.

In the case of Koshik, Angela Stoeger, Daniel Mietchen, Tecumseh Fitch, and their colleagues confirmed that Koshik was imitating Korean words in several ways. First, they asked native Korean speakers to write down what they heard when listening to playbacks of the elephant's sounds.

"We found a high agreement concerning the overall meaning, and even the Korean spelling of Koshik's imitations," Stoeger says. But as far as the scientists can tell, Koshik doesn't actually mean what he says.

It's not completely clear why Koshik adopted his unusual vocal behavior, but the researchers suggest that it might go back to his days as a juvenile. Koshik was the only elephant living at the Everland Zoo in South Korea for about five years, during an important period for elephant bonding and development. Humans were his only social contacts.

"We suggest that Koshik started to adapt his vocalizations to his human companions to strengthen social affiliation, something that is also seen in other vocal-learning species -- and in very special cases, also across species," Stoeger says.

GLASS HAMMER The Inconsolable Secret music review by b_olariu

3 stars The follow up from 2005 named The inconsolable secret is to my ears a step down from previous work, even is overall not bad, the passages are not consistent , are progressive, musicianship is more then ok, but is a pale release in contrast with other albums from that period. Double album, first with only 2 pieces clocking around 40 min is the best from the two, again Yes oriented symphonic prog with keyboards a la ELP and pleasent vocal parts, but that it. Also the symphonic parts are melted in places with some folky medieval themes that goes quite good in places but to thin in overall context. So, I can say is an ok rlease, 3 stars is best I can give to this album, is less great then Shadowlands for sure.

Here's to your health ? Big Bend Now

By KEITH WOMMACK

While reading reviews for the new film?Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare, I thought of my own recent release from pain.

Two weeks ago, as I stood outside and reluctantly prepared to mow my yard, my neighbor?s yardman pulled up with his trailer full of yard equipment. I was reluctant to begin working because my back was aching. It had been hurting for several weeks and I was having trouble bending over.

While watching the yardman drive his riding mower off the trailer, I thought perhaps he could help me. I didn?t realize just how much help he would be.

I walked across the street to ask if he had time to mow my yard too. Knowing that my wife and I always cared for our own lawn, he stopped what he was doing and asked, ?Are you feeling OK??

I told him about my back. He smiled and said, ?Sure. I will mow it.? Then, with a compassionate, caring tone, he described exercises I should try. Apparently, at one time, he?d been a massage therapist. He said that if I would do the exercises, I?d feel better.

I thanked him and walked back to my house. However, as soon as I closed the door behind me, I began to feel better. Even though he suggested exercises, they weren?t needed. It was my reaction to his genuine compassion that facilitated my escape from pain.

Then, last Monday, when he returned to mow the neighbor?s yard, I told him how his caring had helped me find complete freedom. He smiled and said, ?I just don?t like to see anyone suffer.?

There are a lot of people who don?t like to see suffering. This is why many are hoping to see changes in healthcare. The filmmakers of?Escape Fire, a film released on October 5, realize that society needs a paradigm shift when it comes to providing people with better care.

A?Los Angeles Times review of the film states, ?What we have now, Dr. Andrew Weil and others in the film attest, is actually not a healthcare system but a disease management system. It?s a system that believes drugs are the only way: We spend as much on them as the rest of the world spends combined. It?s a system, these folks say, that does not want you to die or to get well; it wants you to keep on spending. And spending. If milk prices had risen as astronomically since 1945 as drugs have, a gallon of milk would cost $48.?

A?Film Journal review says of?Escape Fire, ?There?s a lot wrong in the current state of American medicine. And this film devastatingly points out the reasons why, including an overreliance on pharmaceutical solutions rather than preventive care; the pernicious effects of bad lifestyle choices; the system of hospital and physician reimbursement that accentuates profits and volume rather than maximum attention; and the lack of regard for alternative medical treatments, among many others.?

An?Indiewire review describes part of the film: ?We follow one soldier, Robert Yates, on his way home from Afghanistan. ??His journey towards recovery illustrates how the military, out of sheer pragmatism, has turned to healing techniques such as acupuncture, meditation and yoga in order to relieve the stress and pain of these men. Not only are they curbing narcotic dependency and teaching them empowering techniques to heal themselves for a lifetime, but these procedures are relatively low-cost and low-tech.?

My back pain paled in comparison to many others? intense sufferings. Yet, the experience confirmed for me that health is a mental and spiritual condition.

Again, even though my neighbor?s yardman suggested exercises, it was my reaction to his genuine compassion that facilitated my escape from pain. Years of practicing a spiritual-based form of treatment has taught me that aligning consciousness with God?s love results in physical improvements. The yardman?s heartfelt caring touched me, and it served as the catalyst I needed to prayerfully conquer the pain. His care made God?s care real to me. And I quickly responded.

An?American Psychological Association study released in 2011 stated that more Americans than ever are using prayer as an alternative for health concerns. The authors of the study found that in 1999 13.7 percent of the people surveyed used prayer, while by 2007 the percentage had risen to 49 percent.

A film guide for the?Sundance Film Festival states, ?Destined to be hailed as the definitive film on American healthcare,?ESCAPE FIRE offers a way out?a primer on how to save the health of a nation.?

Saving the health of a nation starts with recognizing that it can be done. Identifying and utilizing effective healing systems is a good start. As innately caring and spiritual people, we can and will make it happen.

Fall Semester: creating a cozy home for the cooler season ...

Fall is such a nostalgic time of year. I love welcoming back my cozy sweaters and favourite boots. Thanksgiving celebrations with family and of course visits to the pumpkin patch just as we did with our parents as children. Football games and the Royal Winter Fair. We can also feather our nests with wool, velvet and tartan. There is such luxury in harvest inspired hues like cranberry and pumpkin, hunter greens and gray flannel. Nothing is more decadent than coming in from a crisp walk in the woods with my family to a warm cup of cider and getting settled with a book or board games in front of a roaring fire. I?m looking forward to raking those leaves already!

Eva Longoria almost free of Tony Parker tats

Carolyn Kaster / AP file

Eva Longoria and Tony Parker in September 2010.

By Peter Gicas, E! Online

Eva Longoria is thisclose to putting the past behind her. At least when it comes to the tattoos she got while with her now ex-husband, Tony Parker.

The former "Desperate Housewives" star was spotted in Beverly Hills on Monday with a small red spot on her neck where she once had the word "Nine" (Parker's basketball jersey number) inked.

It is just one of three Parker-celebrating tats that Longoria began to have removed?back in January. The other two were the couple's wedding date on her wrist and Parker's initials, which were placed somewhere private and not for public viewing.

Naturally, we can't blame the girl for wanting such body art gone for good. After all, Longoria filed for divorce?from Parker nearly two years ago after more than three years of marriage.

No doubt her boyfriend, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, is pleased.

Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel's Wedding Photo: First Look!

Posted Wednesday October 24, 2012 8:13 AM GMT

Showing their enthusiasm for their recent nuptials, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are ecstatic on the cover of People magazine.

The ?Cry Me A River? crooner jumped for joy while his beautiful blushing bride smiled from ear to ear in her gorgeous pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown.

In their interview, Jessica and Justin both gushed over how amazing their wedding turned out- ?It was a really special evening,? said Timberlake, while Ms. Biel added, ?It was a total fantasy experience.?

Justin also sang to his bride as she walked down the aisle- ?It was an original piece I wrote specifically for the evening and for her.?

And given the southern Italy locale of the event, Timberlake knew he had to make everything over-the-top even for his 100 guests. "It was a lot to ask of them to travel, so we figured we'd give our guests a good party!"

Health Conversations: Identifying Food Allergies - Harrison, NY Patch

By Christopher Hassett

My wife is convinced I have a food allergy. I?ve always thought I had hay fever (itchy eyes, sneezing, headaches.) To be honest I?m no longer sure. Can food allergies act like seasonal ones? ?Robert?

The fact that your wife is convinced you have a food allergy makes it worthy of consideration. I will go further and encourage you to take her concerns seriously, for there is wide support for those concerns in the medical community. Dr. Stephan Rechtschaffen, from the Omega Institute, says 50-60% of the patients he sees in his practice have allergies related to food.? More than half! The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) claims 15 million people nationwide have food allergies, a number they say is steadily rising.

A food allergy, in the simplest terms, is an immunological reaction to something the body incorrectly perceives as a threat. These reactions range from being un-noticeably mild to quite severe. If, say, you did have a food allergy and your reactions were severe you would absolutely know about it, for the immune response would be immediate and alarming. Symptoms could be a swelling of the tongue and throat, difficulty breathing, severe cramping, a sudden drop in blood pressure, even death.?

But food allergies can be problematic even when the reactions are seemingly mild. There might initially be the irritating symptoms of itchy eyes, sneezing or headaches, but by continually subjecting the body to the very foods causing these reactions the symptoms over time could escalate towards migraines, asthma, chronic fatigue, eczema, organ and joint inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, and countless other maladies. Escalation occurs by routinely eating the same foods one is allergic to. Such routines often occur in the morning, when it?s common to eat the same meal again and again for years and even decades.? Think of eggs and milk (dairy,) think of toast (wheat/gluten,) think of the soy latte you switched to for health reasons: all of which according to the Mayo Clinic top the list of the most prominent food allergens.? Also at the top of that list are fish, shellfish, peanuts, and tree nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts...) But people can be allergic to citrus, celery, avocado, potato, beer, wine, coffee and pretty much anything else we put into our bodies.

If a food allergy is presumed, one way to find out, aside from going to a doctor, is to eliminate all suspect foods for seven days. If, for instance, you think you?re allergic to milk, then you would remove all milk products from your diet for seven days.? Often what happens is, if there is indeed an allergy involved, you?re likely to feel even worse during the first few days of elimination. But by day four things typically improve and by day 7 you should expect to be feeling noticeably better.

On the eighth day you reintroduce the suspect food back into your diet.? In fact, you might as well indulge on this day, since if it?s a food you?re allergic to it?s also probably one of your favorites?the irony being that the foods we crave most are often the very ones we?re allergic to, though this is by no means a general rule.? If on this 8th day the food being reintroduced is indeed one you are allergic to, then your reaction to it should be much more noticeable than it was only a week before. You?ll then know to remove it from your diet. ?

Try this with up to four foods at a time. In other words, if you suspect not just dairy but also wheat, orange juice and peanuts, then remove all four from your diet for seven days and on the eighth day reintroduce only one of the four. Say it?s dairy on this day. If no reaction occurs, remove it once again on day 9 and reintroduce only wheat. If still nothing, remove wheat on day 10 and bring in orange juice for the day, etc. All the while remain vigilant about how you?re feeling, thinking, and responding to the world around you. Take notes if needed.? Do this until you find the culprit food.

A life can be magically transformed upon eliminating a food allergen, for it is common for people to speak of a resurgence in energy and clarity they hadn?t felt in years. Dr. Rechtschaffen tells of patients who came to him unable to work, unable to walk, their life crippled with fatigue, depression, and pain, their hopes crushed by doctors who discounted their symptoms as imagined or treatable exclusively with punishing medications, only to find that with the elimination of certain foods their symptoms disappeared entirely! No drugs. No therapy. It took only a consciousness to which foods were right and which were altogether wrong for their particular bodies.

LG Optimus L9 comes to T-Mobile on - Know Your Cell

T-Mobile users will be having another nice smartphone option this holiday season, as the LG Optimus L9?will be landing on the carrier Oct. 31 for the bargain price of $79.99 with a new, two-year contract.?

You're going to be getting a heck of a phone for that price, as the LG Optimus L9 will pack a 4.5-inch screen, a dual-core 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera and it will be capable of using T-Mobile's 4G network. You'll also get a phone that launches with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and it will soon be updated to the Android Jelly Bean.?

As we've become accustomed to with T-Mobile, the pricing will be somewhat flexible. You'll be able to land the Android phone for the aforementioned $80 price tag after a mail-in rebate and with a two-year deal. Those who want to spread out the payments a bit can buy it for 20 monthly payments of $15 per month with the proper plan. I'd advise the first option if possible but I do appreciate T-Mobile offering multiple ways to pay for this.?

The Social Global Internet (Infographic) | Business 2 Community

One of the best ways to understand the future of the Internet is to study its past.

The Internet was built to connect multiple computers so that they could communicate. That is built-in social.

Of course, as more and larger computers were connected, search became a driving force for helping people discover what they were looking for online.

As social networks emerged, social sharing began to affect our methods of information discovery. Now social sharing is the next horizon for web discovery.

In addition to Google search that now favors social content, each of the respective social networks are searchable to a different extent.

So, what?s next? Insights into the future below, but first ?

Check out the infographic from Copyblogger that brings home an essential point about the web ? it was designed from the beginning to be social.

A History of Social Media [Infographic] - Infographic

What comes next that businesses should be planning for now?

The mobile version of all of this will become exceedingly important for future business relevancy.

Just as social sharing adds context to digital content, so too it works for offline sharing as well, with mobile effectively merging the two.

It is obvious that we will all be more globally interconnected in some way. There is no doubt about it.

What does this mean for your business? Many conclude that global connectivity doesn?t matter for them because their business is local.

The fact is greater connectivity by definition must necessarily affect each and every one of us that reside on one planet.

We will have to consider how that will affect our respective businesses.

What does more and better information mean for you, your buyers, and business influencers?

It could mean a race to the top of your industry if you are prepared to innovate.

Are you?

How do you envision the future of the Internet changing your business practices?

Obama-Romney Debate a Chance to Delve Into Global Energy

While President Obama and Mitt Romney have done plenty of sparring over domestic energy-policy? issues?such as gasoline prices and who would drill more on public lands?they should both be prepared in Monday?s foreign-policy debate to lay out how they?ll take on the fundamentals of a rapidly changing world energy economy.

The global energy landscape confronting the next president is very different from the one that faced the candidates battling for the White House just four years ago?and it raises a host of complex new foreign-policy questions.

?You have to go back a long time to find a four-year period where the energy scene has changed so dramatically,? said Michael Levi, an energy-policy expert at the Council on Foreign Relations. ?We don?t just have shifting views on old policy debates, we have debates on issues that didn?t exist four years ago. Because of the political and economic situations, we?ve only been talking about energy domestically, but we haven?t scratched the surface internationally.?

Among the new international energy challenges facing the next president: Asia?s growing thirst for oil means that for the first time in history, developing economies such as China and India will consume more energy than the developed world?and compete aggressively with the U.S. for finite oil resources. The new explosion in U.S. natural-gas production offers opportunities for U.S. companies abroad?and raises questions as companies consider exporting the resource. Melting Arctic sea ice is opening up a new rush to drill for oil in the treacherous north?and possibly setting the stage for future environmental catastrophes. And underlying it all is the increasingly urgent problem of climate change caused by burning the coal, oil, and gas that fuel the global economy?but which scientists say could soon lead to catastrophic extreme weather, rising sea levels, and other disasters.

In a speech on Thursday on ?Energy Diplomacy in the Twenty-First Century,? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spelled out many of those changes and said that her successor will need to place global energy policy at the heart of U.S. foreign policy.

?Energy will be one of the profound issues shaping the 21st century, and we are changing our foreign policy to reflect that,? said Clinton, who has said she expects to retire as the nation?s top diplomat no matter who wins the presidential election.

?Today, energy cuts across the entirety of U.S. foreign policy. It rests at the core of geopolitics. It?s an issue of wealth and power?. It is a matter of national security and global stability. It is at the heart of the global economy and is key to economic development. It?s even an issue of democracy and human rights,? she said.

While energy resources have long played a role in global conflict and diplomacy, their role is increasing and changing.

?This is a moment of profound change ... it raises complex questions about the direction we?re heading,? Clinton said.

Over the last year, Clinton has significantly elevated the role of energy as a driver of foreign policy. Last year, Clinton created the State Department?s Bureau of Energy Resources, charged with forging energy-driven foreign policy around the globe. In the coming weeks, she said, she will be sending out policy guidance to U.S. embassies to elevate reporting on energy and increase outreach to international energy partners.

Among the biggest changes: While the U.S. was the world?s biggest energy consumer and fossil-fuel polluter throughout the last century, China surpassed it in that role two years ago. Studies show that as China, India, and other developing nations continue to grow in the coming decades, the energy resources they choose could have a profound effect on the fate of the global economy?and the planet.

Growing Asian economies are fueled by an increasing appetite for oil, which could send demand and prices higher, dramatically increasing the pollution that causes climate change. It will be essential for the United States and its corporations, Clinton said, to be involved in driving the choices of new global energy consumers.

?The transformation to cleaner energy is central to the 21st-century economy,? she said. ?1.3 billion people don?t have access to energy?we have the technology and know-how that can help people leapfrog to energy that is reliable and affordable but also clean and efficient.?

Meanwhile, U.S. businesses are benefiting from a surge in domestic natural-gas production brought about by breakthroughs in ?fracking? technology. That boom could have a major impact on the world?s energy future, because natural gas has only about half the carbon emissions of coal. Today, U.S. companies are now working in China and Europe to help those countries develop shale gas, which could also help the U.S. achieve strategic geopolitical goals. Russia, the chief supplier of natural gas to Europe, has long wielded that resource as a power lever. But the State Department has created new initiatives for U.S. companies to help European countries develop their own natural-gas resources, which could limit Russia?s power. That?s good for the U.S., but it could also increase environmental concerns about the impact of fracking on water quality.

Another change to the global energy picture: Melting sea ice due to climate change has opened up the Arctic Ocean to oil drilling, and countries are rushing to be the first to exploit the resource. ?The Arctic is a frontier of oil and gas?and also a potential catastrophe. It?s critical we act now to set the rules of the road.? Clinton said. ?Four years ago, these issues didn?t have much currency, but now they?re seen as increasingly important.?

No matter who is the next president, the problem of climate change will need to be confronted. Many U.S. politicians, including Romney, have questioned whether oil and gas emissions contribute to climate change, but those views are out of step with the research of thousands of scientists across the globe. Meanwhile, more leaders in other nations are growing increasingly frustrated with the United States for failing to enact climate policy. Next month, at an annual United Nations summit on climate change, it?s expected that the U.S. will once again come under fire from the rest of the world for dragging its feet on the issue.

Although Obama and Romney have sparred repeatedly over domestic energy issues on the campaign trail, they have said little about how they would approach energy as a foreign-policy matter, let alone lay out how they would address climate change. But both of those issues will be at the heart of the nation?s foreign-policy future, and Monday?s debate provides an opportunity for some serious discussion.

PFT: 49ers complain about Seahawks CBs

Patriots Seahawks FootballAP

Jets linebacker Calvin Pace recently called the Patriots? no-huddle offense ?borderline illegal.?? The Jets apparently believe that it?s the officials, not the Pats, who are failing to follow the rules.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has explained to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that the Jets will be emphasizing to officials the provisions that allow defenses to react and adapt to changes made in the offensive lineup.

?It?s going to be a major point of contention before [our] game with the officials to make sure that they know the rule is when they substitute we?re permitted to substitute,? Pettine told Mehta.

?If the officials permit [the Patriots] to do that, then the game is going to become chaos,? Pettine said.? ?That?s the problem.? Because we?re going to be running guys on.? We need to make sure that that is enforced for this game, because we found examples on tape where it has not been.? Then it?s impossible.? Now you can?t defend it.?

The rulebook makes it clear that the officials have the responsibility to ensure that the defense has a fair chance to adjust to lineup changes.? Per Mehta, Rule 5, Section 2, Article 10 states that ?if a substitution is made by the offense, the offense shall not be permitted to snap the ball until the defense has been permitted to respond with its substitutions. . . . The offense is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage and snapping the ball in an obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul (i.e. ? too many men on the field). . . . The umpire will stand over the ball until the Referee deems that the defense has had a reasonable time to complete its substitutions.?

?When they change, that should trigger the ability for us to change,? Pettine said.? ?I?m all for the no-huddle and one grouping.? Whoever you put out there, you better be prepared to go through a whole series and be out there for a while.? And that?s fine.? When they change, we need to be given the right to change . . . and we?re going to make sure that right is given to us.?

And that?s the difference between hitting the accelerator with versatile players on the field and shuttling in other players quickly in the hopes of catching the defense with its pants down.

Should the Jets be taking their concerns public?? In a roundabout way, they are complaining about the officiating ? not from their own games, but from the games involving other teams.? The comments are, in essence, a more subtle version of Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride?s complaint that 49ers defensive end Justin Smith ?gets away with murder.?

And now the question becomes whether Pats coach Bill Belichick will rebuke the Jets, Harbaugh-style, for both criticizing and influencing officiating.? Because, at its core, that?s precisely what the Jets are doing.

If it works on Sunday, it will have been brilliant.
